I'm a PhD student in International History at Columbia University in New York (though I'm originally from the UK and grew up in Oxford). I love travel, and over the years have spent time travelling and/or volunteering and/or studying in Kenya and much of east and southern Africa; Thailand and Cambodia; Lebanon and Syria; Bolivia and Nicaragua; and the US. In April 2013 I will compete in the Marathon des Sables 6-day ultra-marathon in the Moroccan Sahara.
Working on my PhD thesis has provided the perfect opportunity to combine work with travel! In the course of my research over the past two years I've visited more than 60 archives and libraries across the US, Britain, Switzerland, South Africa, and Zambia. From January to June 2013 I'll be making my second research trip to South Africa (the Eastern Cape, Cape Town, Pretoria, and Bloemfontein), as well as making a two-week trip to Ghana.
