I was just as shocked as you were about this incident. It was a surprise, even more because I did not have them in my bedroom, or anywhere else in my apartment.
I am very sorry you were the unfortunate ones who had to set the alarm. As soon as I could on the day you detected bugs I went to a pet shop (thinking it was the best place to be informed about this) and bought fleas-killer insecticide. If I remember well this was your diagnosis, which I thought it could be right, since your partner is a nurse I assumed it was accurate.
Following instructions of a veterinary I sprayed insecticide that Sunday, once you left, on the entire place, removed all the bed lined, send duvet and pillow to the laundry. Also I permanently removed the carpet that was under the bed.
After the sanitation I did my self, thinking they were fleas, the place was apparently bug free, no evidence of them on day 1.
But unfortunately a few days later I found small bugs and took a sample, right away I informed Airbnb and I called a sanitation specialist who made a proper diagnosis and suggested an action protocol.
He explained that these were other bugs, not fleas, not harmful to humans, but very uncomfortable and not desirable to have in one’s home. He said that this type of bug is sometimes found in hotels, even good ones, as they travel with people, which is probably how they got there. The specialist examined the whole house and found them localized only in one room.
Last week on Monday, a company with all the credentials from the local government came to spray special insecticides for this case.
A second and preventive application is scheduled to take place two weeks after the first one.
After my notification to Airbnb they cancelled all my bookings to prevent affecting anyone else, only after I provided evidence of the sanitation procedures my announcement was re-activated.
Also they relocate the guests who came after you.
I am glad at lest to hear that it would have been a 5 star experience have it not been because of this incident.
