During my last semester at University in the Spring of 2007 I decided to study abroad in France. I did a lot more traveling then studying and was able to see most of Western Europe and went to North Africa twice. I graduated while sitting at a bar in Madrid, Spain sipping a glass of Jack Daniels and Coke. Upon returning to the U.S. I joined the Navy and during my service was able to see such beautiful locales as Iraq and Saudi Arabia in the dead of summer. As much as I loved the 130 F (49 C) temperatures I sought a more tropical setting in my post Navy life. After being honorably discharged in February 2011 I headed south for Costa Rica (my third trip) with the intent to backpack for a few months before returning to the States for football season. When a lockout threatened to cancel the whole season I looked for an opportunity to stay in Costa Rica. I had thought about getting into the hostel business while standing the endless watches at sea but did not expect to do it so quickly.
While trolling through the “hostels for sale” ads I came across this place in San Pedro near the University. The day after a drunken St. Patrick’s Day Party I hopped on a bus and head across town to check it out. I thought the place had a lot of potential and the terms of the sale were very good. After doing a border run to Nicaragua and securing a loan from my parents I achieved the backpackers dream and became a bona fide hostel owner.
