Hey, I'm Richard!
Rockville, Maryland, United States · Member since July 2009

Couple in mid sixties; have traveled in Mediterranean countries and France some years ago, now planning travel with daughter and her cousin, both women in mid twenties. Quiet, good humored, and do not smoke or drink or drugs. (I can't recall whether I swear or not!) Get along well with pets - daughter is serious animal rescue volunteer (and vegetarian).
&
All are employed: computer and environmental fields; I have worked at same federal civil rights agency for 28 years in computer security. (Before that I was a civil rights organizer and also founded one of the first free community computer centers in US, serving community organizations throughout the 1970s; fought for years for resident rights in urban renewal areas, and for civil service reform - and with good success. As the eighties began, though, wife suggested that I get a real job - and to come home when I did. So I did!)

More stuff: get to know us! Hobbies together, wife and I: stained glass, woodworking - we built our house largely with our own hands; good idea but it took so long that when it was finally relatively complete the nice wet darkroom we included greeted the extinction of film photography! - reading (collected nice library of 4-5000 books (almost all nonfiction: orientation toward cultural, literary criticism, philosophical, civil rights and feminist) but never would have done so had we ever guessed that computers would have brought not only the technological resources to access all that they do, but also some degree of accord about copyrights and fair use to actually make the resources as available as they are now. Our currency when wife and I barter between selves is wall space: she to use for art, I for bookshelves). My hobbies are also cooking and electronics (or was while anyone could actually see a transistor). Wife Nancy says in her next life she wants to work with artistic tiles. Occasionally host foreign students - most recently, German high school student.
&
My musical interests: Celtic, traditional folk and labor, baroque; Nancy's range is far more broad - she even made a pilgrimage to Memphis and Graceland this past spring!
&
Not much into: cutting edge consumer electronics (like cellphones and MP3 players - are those still cutting edge?), social media, PC games.

Daughter didn't much like high school so she joined the circus - for real! Actually, a traveling carnival, for a year (with our grudging permission; we stayed in close touch). So she got that finished and came back and got degrees in environmental science and international business, hoping to work on sustainable and economical alternatives to conversion of endangered habitats and poaching.

WE ARE Seeking moderately priced (economical!) lodgings convenient to metro access. All are looking forward to next trip, which will be to Paris and Barcelona. (French studied in college but totally forgotten!) We need:
- Non-smoking only!
- Convenient metro access.
- Two actual bedrooms with total of at least two beds for 4 people.
Sofa beds are okay in separate, actual bedrooms rather than common areas.
- Stairs okay unless they are endless.
- Non-smoking only!
&
Thanks for considering meeting us and renting to us!
(Look us up or stay with us when you're near Washington, DC! Our house is directly across the street from a major metro station.)
&
(And for goodness sakes, don't let my kid know that I told on her about the circus!)

[Wife just read profile. Says she can remember that she swears! Also says my photo is awful. I just had someone at work snap it; I had none - digital photography is one of those cutting edge consumer technologies.....]

I am looking over what Airbnb says to put here. One is a 'life motto'! Sorry, sounds too much like the occasional team-building exercises I avoid by hiding under my desk. But if I had to have one, I'd guess that the Mehitabel's refrain in Don Marquis' Archy and Mehitabel isn't too bad.
