I am 3rd generation born in Hawaii and have been in the rental business on my own as a Broker since 2009. I have however been in the rental of hotel rooms and apartments since 1975. I am now running the Big Surf Condo apartments full time.

Maxine is a very accommodating host and the location of the property can not be more convenient to the sights and sounds of Waikiki. I would recommend staying here to anyone who wants to be walking distance to downtown, but not be in the midst of the tourist thrall.
Our stay with Maxine was unfortunately a disaster. We're definitely not picky or neat freaks, but the apartment was in really bad shape. There were missing windows, a few random dishes that looked like they had been pulled out a trash bin, and several of the main lights in the rooms were broken. The bed was basically crappy gym foam half covered with a sheet that wouldn't stay on. Considering what we paid for this room, we were shocked and really disappointed.
Finally, Maxine thought that it was reasonable to bang on our door three times the night that we got in between the hours of 2am and 3am. When I finally got out of bed, got dressed, and opened the door, she wanted to let me know they were towing a car in the parking lot and wanted to know if it was ours. This is in a building of at least 100 units. If she really thought it was our car, wouldn't you wait until the morning to figure it out?
Anyway, this was one of the worst accommodations we had ever stayed in. Buyer beware.
The location of this apartment is pretty good. If you love shopping you can go to the biggest mall Alamoana only 5min drive. If you love the night life, the Addiction club, the best one in Waikiki in my mind, is only 5min walk. And the beach also 10min walk. The host Maxine is a very nice and charming lady, she would do her best to make you feel most comfortable at your staying. There is something you need to remember: do not park your car in the garage without permission, otherwise it would be towed, you should talk to Maxine and buy a permission ticket, it is $5 per day. Although the apartment is pretty, the restroom is little bit old and the room is not very big (but it is enough for 2 people).
As this was my first experience of using Airbnb, I am very pleased of renting this place from Maxine. I arrived at the apartment a few hours early and Maxine already had the key in the lock-box waiting for me. I like to add Maxine answered my questions promptly and was very attentive to my needs before my arrival.
The apartment was clean, and no bugs seen, plenty of sunshine and great breeze that went through the apartment. The kitchen had plenty of pots, pans cutting knives, dishes, a microwave with nice stove and fridge. The television had enough cable channels (not that this matters!) but only used only once when one day it rained. The only thing I wished if it was a bit quieter ( Ala Moana Blvd.) the street was busy with buses, motorcycles, trash trucks and cars.
When I did meet with Maxine the day of my arrival she gave me all the codes and policies of her building. The bedroom was very clean and much bigger than I expected. Maxine informed me that she accidentally booked my original apartment that was a studio I requested and upgraded me to a full one bedroom with two balconies with a view of the marina and mountains in the back. This apartment was literally 3 or 4 blocks from the Waikiki beach and was an easy walk every morning. There is also a huge mall about 5 or 6 blocks south "Ala Moana Mall" and 6 blocks Northeast from the main drag of Waikiki hotels there's lots of small shops, another mall and restaurants.
Overall I had a good experience and would like to rent again from Maxine.
