A beautiful view, but…
After check-in we noticed several issues:
- the master bedroom's bathroom had a sewer-like smell (masked by air freshener),
- the fridge was not cold at all, 62ºF (my watch has a built-in thermometer),
- the Internet was not working properly.
I immediately contacted Neil and he agreed to check on these issues. The next morning the fridge was colder (51ºF), the odor from the bathroom was worse, it could be smelled from the bedroom with the bathroom door closed and the Internet was still working intermittently. Neil came over (while we were away) to check on the problems and concluded that everything was fine and that there was no unusual smell.
As I continued to complain, Neil sent us an email "inviting" us to leave the house in the middle of the rental (providing a 10% discount for the nights we had spent and a full refund for the remaining nights). As we were traveling with small children this was not a viable option for us. The prospect of being suddenly vacated from the house stressed the entire family. We replied to Neil that it was not acceptable for us to leave the house on such a short notice and threatened to call authorities. Neil backed off and allowed us to stay.
The fridge never went below 48ºF during our stay (food safety is ensured below 40ºF).
The Internet never worked well. Our devices would connect to be kicked off the wifi base after a while. I measured download speeds to be around 0.1 Mbps.he last two days we had no Internet at all from the house's wifi.
The bad smell in the master bedroom's bathroom persisted during our stay.
Otherwise, the house is very nice, tastefully decorated with a magnificent view that you can't get enough of. We saw plenty of birds in the nearby trees.
- Upon arrival, Neil told us the alarm was not functioning. It was supposed to be fixed during our stay, it never happened.
- Neil told us that a housekeeper would clean the house on Tuesday (three nights into our stay), it never happened.
- The house is perched on a hill accessible though a very steep dirt road (only for 4WD). There is no trash collection service on the premises and the trash needs to be brought by car about two miles down the road. Upon check-out, Neil was visibly upset because we had left trash in the bin and not taken it out ourselves. This was not only impossible with our car loaded with luggage but it's a standard service I expect as part of the check-out process on any rental.
Overall: This is a beautiful house, with some serious issues. I paid full rate but did not get a fully functioning house nor the promised services. I was disappointed and would not recommend (website hidden): Neil threatened to write "some things" about me if I wrote a bad review of the house (SIC)...
Fantastic house and amazing view! I recommend it to all of you :)
In the middle of jungle with ocean view, you can enjoy of silence and birds singing. Magical!
6 of us spent a week in this house over Christmas and had an awesome time. Neil, the property manager, knows the area very well and helped line up top rate diving, surfing, and zip lining excursions. He was also very helpful with driving directions to and from San Jose.
The house itself is gorgeous. It’s brand new (I think we were the third group to stay there) and has all amenities you need for a very comfortable stay. The pool is fantastic and there’s an outdoor bar area with a grill if you want to barbeque. The views off the deck are stunning and make for great wildlife viewing (we saw all sorts of birds and monkeys) as well as killer sunsets. It feels pretty secluded but is really only about 5 minutes up the hill from the main drag in Uvita where you can find a few markets and restaurants. It’s about 10-15 minutes from a number of different beaches, all of which are gorgeous, and 20 minutes from Domincal, a great surf town with some nightlife and good waves.
Since it’s a new house there were a few quirks still being worked out (figuring out some of the lights, a running toilet, etc…) but they were really minor and didn’t affect us too much. I would imagine they’ve all been taken care of by the time you read this anyway.
There are two caretakers, Licho and his wife Darlene, who live across the courtyard. Darlene cleans each day and does laundry every few days for the guests and Licho looks after the pool, outdoor area, and is a general handy man in case you need anything. They are extremely warm, nice, and very informative about the area if you speak Spanish. They took very good care of us while we were there.
In all I would definitely recommend this place to anybody travelling to the Uvita/Domincal area. It’s perfect for groups of friends or families with children. It was very hard to leave and we hope to be back!
One word of advice: wherever you’re going in Costa Rica I would recommend renting a car with 4 wheel drive. Many of the roads are dirt/rock and it makes getting around a lot easier. Happy Travels!
