Hey, I'm Lois!
Watertown, Massachusetts, United States · Member since June 2012

I am an active, retired woman (widow) who wants/needs to visit Tucson very soon (late June/early July) for c. 3 weeks to help me decide whether to move there. It's important that I come in the summer to check out the heat! I've lived in the Boston area for c. 38 years, working primarily as support staff in the mental health field. On the couple of occasions that I visited Arizona (my son attended Arizona State), I was enchanted by the area. I love cactus and the whole desert lanscape!

I have 3 children who are scattered to the winds: Los Angeles, Atlanta and Wichita. As much as I love my home and the thought of moving is wrenching, at the same time I'm craving change and I believe the Tucson community offers a wide variety of opportunities for keeping busy. I'm very involved in peace, social justice and environmental work; love to read, particularly histories; adore cats; enjoy eating (love to try different ethnic foods, but perhaps Middle Easterm and Mexican are my favorites) but not necessarily cooking. Rarely go to movies, rarely watch TV (don't have cable), but spend far too much time on internet alternative news sites. One of my passions is gardening and I'm fascinated by the prospect of desert landscaping.

I volunteer at St. Francis House in Boston, the largest day program for the poor and homeless in New England; I work in the clothing unit in the morning and then help serve lunch. I also help care for two plots in the local community garden that grows vegetables for the local food pantry.

For a number of years I have been a Boston Hospitality Homes host, e.g., we open our homes, free of charge, to patients and their families who travel to Boston for medical care, Boston being one of the world's meccas for health care. The high cost of hotels in the Boston area make such trips prohibitively expensive so this is a wonderful giving opportunity to meet people from all over this country and the world. I have had guests from the far corners of the world -- Russia, Paraguay and Kuwait, to name a few countries, as well as from Maine to California. For the last few years I have also rented an area of my home so I'm very cognizant of the need for respect and boundaries while staying in others' homes.

I don't do social networking, e.g., (website hidden), (website hidden), etc. so such sites are not sources of further information about me. However, feel free to ask me any questions. I'm very anxious to start looking for places to stay since, as I mentioned earlier, I hope to visit Tucson very soon. Unfortunately, the three friends who would most be willing to write references for me are not able to do so right now. The husband of my next door neighbor had surgery, a valve repair; another friend is on a cruise of the Greek islands; and the third is out-of-state, visiting her new grandchild. If not having references is a deterrent to you, please let me know and I'll drum up someone else. Thank you for your forebearance.
