The apartment is centrally located between the blue and red metro lines, is close to shops & central park and is in a safe & quiet neighborhood. Nice places to eat just around the corner and many places like Guggenheim, Museum of Natural History, Time Warner Center and 5th avenue shops are within 30 min. walking distance. The apartment is clean and comfortable for 2 people and do-able for 3 people. The bed is very comfortable; the foldout bed is OK. Did not meet Sally, but key was left as promised and communication via email worked OK.
Overall, we had a positive experience at this apartment -- the place itself was beautiful, clean, larger than the photos suggest, good value for the price, and totally comfortable for the 5 of us (plus dog) staying there. Key pick-up was easy. The location was ideal - near central park, subway, buses, etc, and very quiet at night. There's a nice little grocery just around the corner for meals at home, and the kitchen was decently equipped.
A few complaints that dampened our experience:
We were only given one key for the 5 of us staying there - which wouldn't have been so bad if the buzzer hadn't been disconnected. This meant that if anyone needed to get in who didn't have the one key, they'd have to call someone who was home (paying roaming fees, since we're Canadian) and get them to walk down the 4 flights of stairs and let them in. We were told we should have asked in advance for more keys and that it wouldn't be possible at that point, even though we were never informed we'd only have one and were staying for 4 nights. In addition, the WIFI was not working for the duration of our time there (though, for the last couple days, you could intermittently connect to one of the networks if you stood in the far corner of the apartment). Communication was easy with Sally before we arrived - but once we got there, she was slow to respond, and our few concerns weren't addressed - felt more like dealing with an absentee landlord than any of my other airbnb stays. Then again, this is NYC!
We really enjoyed our stay. The neighborhood was very quiet with lots to do. There was a subway a block away and central park was a block away also. The room was clean and warm and a nice stay after a long day in the city
Our host was friendly and helpful. The neighborhood was great. The penthouse apartment was quiet and exceeded our expectations. I would happily rent this place again!
I was renting Sally's place for an actor who was part of a showcase I was producing in NY. It worked out great. No issues. Sally was easy to meet and get the key from and all was as it should be. Great location and value was solid.
Sally was the perfect host! Whenever I had a question I would get a response within 24 hours. The apartment was more then I imagined! Plenty of space for our family of 5. It was very clean and comfortable. The neighborhood was great, so many restaurants and shops at your doorstep! We will definitely be back! Thanks so much for a memorable time in NYC!
Lovely apartment with exposed brick work and wooden beams. In great location just beside central park. Loads of good bars and restuarants nearby and two subways within a few minutes walk. Sally very helpful and friendly. The apartment has everything you need - it is pretty basic but comfortable and there is a good shower and wifi. It is also very quiet. Can definately recommend - we were 3 and was perfect - might be a bit tight with 4 people + though as only one proper bedroom.
Renting an apartment from Sally is also renting an apartment from a professional landlord. And that have good sides and bad sides – and we explored both.
Sally (or the firm she is working for) has several apartments in New York which she lets out to tourists. We booked the apartment on the pictures and with address shown above six months ago – but got an apartment two blocks away in a different building. That is a problem because I believe that she then violates one of the main principles of Airbnb: What you see is what you get. And Sally was also very reluctant to answer when we asked a week before arriving if it was the apartment shown above we were getting. Three times we had to ask before she sort of admitted that it wasn’t.
So this review is not concerning the apartment shown above but a similar one we lived in for nine days at 83rd Street. But it could be you – so it’s good to know what you will end up staying in.
The apartment bore evidence of that it was old. The cabinets and appliances was a little bit tired especially the refrigerator. It was quite noisy so we have to unplug it at night to be able to sleep. The spare sofa bed was pretty oncomfy and is only suitable for children. The main bed was could have been better but was al right.
But the apartment had al the promised amenities. The cable TV and the Internet worked good (except for one day where Sally fixed it) and it was nice and clean.
The location was good (perhaps better than the one on 81st Street). 20 meters from the apartment is Columbus Ave with a lot of good restaurants, kiosks and supermartkets (remember to also turn right and go uptown). And if you go to Amsterdam Ave there is even more nice restaurants.
We met Sally when we checked out, she was nice to talked to and as a band aid she let us store our luggage for a couple of ours in the apartment.
I will only recommend this apartment if you are two people who can sleep in the same bed and doesn’t care about luxury. It’s a good location to explore New York from in a good quiet neighbourhood.
