I´m from El Castillo, La Fortuna, Costa Rica. I manage a wonderfull B&B with a magical natural surrounding.
I like almost all kind of sports, specially soccer, and my favorite music is the rock music.

This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we were blown away by how amazing this property was. The view is unmatched. Absolutely breathtaking. Augustine was extremely helpful with suggestions and a helpful eye for wildlife spotting. 4x4 is a must and the road made for a great part of the adventure. Ate dinner and lunch at the onsite restraint and Chef Benedict was incredible. His food was the best we had in country and he was a total character. Hilarious. Overall, count have asked for a better experience.
Nepenthe is absolutely beautiful. The photographs don't do this place justice. The view is incredible. I would recommend going with a car because it's up a hilly road and taxis to La Fortuna are about $30 (one way); however I wouldn't recommend spending much time in La Fortuna because the Observatory Lodge, Butterfly Conservatory, and Ziplining (all a $20 cab ride) are much more worth your time. Agustine was incredible helpful and went above and beyond to help us (we were probably annoying guests because we didn't have a car).
The view from the lake was superb! The room was very clean and big and we enjoyed very much Chef Benedict's conversations and meals! The whole experience was great. A special thanks to Alejandro who's profesionalism and smile made our stay even better! Oh, and great breakfasts every morning.
This was a great place to stay near Arenal! El Castillo is a beautiful mountain town with sweeping views and none of the hustle and bustle of La Fortuna. It is very close to the National park entrance. The rooms at Nepenthe are cozy, clean and private. The staff are very helpful, friendly and accommodating! Breakfast was different every morning and delicious. Alejandro was available to answer any questions. The owners are Americans who spend half of the year in Costa Rica and have a cute Boston Terrier running around. Chef Benedict at the onsite restaurant makes every meal very special! The hotel is at the top of a long steep dirt road that is very intimidating the first time up! But it's doable and worth it to get the views at the top. Highly recommend this place!
Our host, Alejandro, was excellent, very personable and friendly, and always available for information or just plain chatting. He pointed out a toucan in a nearby tree and also a beautiful scarlet red macaw and allowed us the use of his binoculars for closeup views. The jungle sounds (birds, howler monkeys, cicadas) were plentiful and soothing to listen to.
The B&B itself was comfortable with all the essentials. The grounds and the view are even more breathtakingly beautiful than the pictures depict. Breakfast was fabulous and the restaurant, having only been open three days prior, was superb.
We met the owner and his lovely little dog and learned a lot about the area.
We would highly recommend Nepenthe B&B and will return someday in the future.
My wife and I and our kids spent three nights at Nepenthe in April 2015. The setting is amazing! The pictures online do not do the beauty of Nepenthe's location justice. And the wildlife; we saw more birds staying here than in Monteverde! There are parrots and we even saw the only scarlet macaw of our trip during our stay. Our kids especially loved the pool. The room itself was basic and met our expectations. The people are friendly, helpful, and speak excellent English if your Spanish is a little rusty. We had only one issue during our stay and it was quickly remedied to our satisfaction. The road to Nepenthe is no joke; we would definitely recommend a 4x4 or AWD vehicle. We were prepared and loved that Nepenthe was out of the way. One of the best things Nepenthe has going for it is the restaurant on site. When we arrived they had only just opened after a change in ownership/management. "Benedict's" has great food, freshly prepared, by one of the most passionate chefs we've ever come across. He went out of the way to make each night special, and we dined there each night of our 3-night stay. We strongly recommend Nepenthe based on value, location, the hosts, and the amenities. Thanks again for a great stay!
Great stay at Nepenthe! Clear view of the beautiful lake and volcano. Recommend this place to anyone staying in Arenal! Everyone was very friendly and helpful.
Agustin was there everyday to answer questions and provide friendly service. Tres Cabras was pretty tasty, and highly recommended (you must go at least once, if not more although they don't change their prix fixe menu often). Breakfast each morning was authentic and filling as well.
We had booked the main house but we're instead given a small cabana at the end of a row of 4, below the main house. This worked to our advantage because we weren't connected to anyone and probably had more privacy but had to walk up the hill anytime we wanted to use the wifi.
Overall we were pleased with how secluded and "off the tourist path" Nepenthe was. The view was almost always beautiful (even with the rain clouds) and we enjoyed seeing the animals in the area and on the property. We did rent a 4WD SUV and so happy we did.
We tried to get messages at the on-site spa, with no luck. The business doesn't answer emails and even when the door was open we couldn't find anyone to talk to.
My boyfriend and I had an amazing couple of days here, and our only complaint was that we wished we stayed longer!!
All reviews are accurate - you will definitely want a car with 4WD to get you here via 20-30 minutes of bumpy, dirt roads, but don't let that deter you! The view is worth every bump in the road!
Agustin was helpful with all set up communication - booking, massage reservations (highly recommended) and directions. His nephew, Alejandro, was a perfect host - personable, helpful, and really went over and beyond to make us comfortable and at peace in this beautiful setting. Speaking of - wow! That view!
Don't stay on the main stretch of touristy hotels but enjoy being at the tranquil Nepenthe. I highly recommend staying here and wish I could go back right now!
Enjoyed everything about Nepenthe, except maybe the horrible roads leading to it. The room was comfortable with a lovely private wrap around deck to do yoga on. It rained at night during our trip so we were happy to be able to eat at the delicious tres Cabras restaurant. Appetizer, entree and wine for $20, this was by far the best food we had in Costa Rica. The owners were very friendly and played great music. The restaurant has a romantic feel with string lights, open air but protected from the rain. We enjoyed a nearby hike of Arenal Volcano and a day at the hot springs. Alejandro was very helpful in giving us tips and the breakfast each morning was a treat. Would definitely recommend and stay here again. Namaste!
