My boyfriend and I loved our stay at Nepenthe! The views from the property are gorgeous and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms are decently sized and clean. The restaurant on the grounds of Nepenthe is the best in El Castillo, and very convenient after a long day of traveling. We recommended Nepenthe to some friends of ours who came a week later and they loved it.
Loved our short stay! The most beautiful views of lake arenal. The breakfast was fantastic and the staff were very friendly
We were welcomed warmly immediately by staff and shown to the room which had a very beautiful view of the volcano and lake. The room was a huge private room. We enjoyed great breakfasts and an attentive staff that were very friendly. We especially recommend getting a massage with Chris!
Great place with a beautiful view! Friendly staff and a delicious breakfast made our stay wonderful.
Agustin welcomed us to Nepenthe for a two-day stay over the New Year's holiday. Although the weather was not great (rainy both days, with no view of the volcano and limited view of the lake), we did have a good stay, especially with the on-site restaurant's (Tres Cabras's) New Year's Eve celebration. Though we did not eat there for a regular meal, the kebabs and drinks they served on NYE's were excellent.
The room we stayed in (Room #03, forest view) was fine, with a large bed and hot water in the shower. However, we did hear from one of the guests that the hot water was out in another room. We enjoyed the hot tub near the spa, but didn't get to enjoy the pool. Breakfast was typical Tico breakfast, with rice, beans, sausage, and plantains. Overall, we thought the price was a bit high for the accommodation and service but were fine with what we got.
The drive up the hill was difficult but possible in a two-wheel drive vehicle (Toyota Yaris, low clearance!). We enjoyed our stay and would recommend Nepenthe to a couple looking for a laid-back vacation in El Castillo.
We were a little confused as we were assigned a room in the main house when we expected a Familiar Cabana/home when we arrived. In the end, we were glad to be in the main house. We appreciated Agustin’s warm welcome and orientation (he even included a welcome cerveza). Our room was clean and included a refrigerator. We enjoyed the fabulous views—including a toucan who visited a nearby papaya tree more than once each day. A lovely hot tub is located just a short walk away, and we thoroughly enjoyed it while sipping our morning coffee. Just steps from our room, breakfast was served family style--facilitating conversation with other guests. We also enjoyed therapeutic and deep tissue massages by the resident masseuse. She was amazing! My only disappointment was that the pool was cold. I would have enjoyed going for a swim.
What a wonderful stay! I know there have been many comments about the road to the property, but please do not let it discourage you (I admit I was very nervous about it myself before we arrived). Yes, it is a bumpy ride, and yes, it takes about 30 minutes to get to La Fortuna, but trust me, it's well worth it for the view from the property. I actually feel sorry for people staying in La Fortuna who only get a view of the volcano (when and if it's not clouded over).
Apart from the view, Agustin was extremely helpful in organizing tours for our 5 day stay (ziplining, hiking, canyoneering, kayaking, hot springs) and answering our questions about the area!
The breakfast served each morning was delicious and filling, and the restaurant on the property, Tres Cabras, is AMAZING. Ryan and Rebecca are gracious, inviting hosts and the food is absolutely delicious. We ate there three times during our 5 night stay!
Don't miss out on this experience!
Agustin was nice and helpful. The house and breakfast were really nice and all appears very familiar. We also really enjoyed the visit of the restaurant 'Las tres cabras' with its nice canadian couple.
The view is as advertised and the room was extremely clean and comfortable. I wish I could have stayed more than one day to enjoy it more. The drive is a bit treacherous, especially at night, but it's well worth the trip.
