Ashley works in marketing and Derek is a student following his service as an Air Force mechanic. Together, we enjoy hiking, travel, good books, good food, good conversation, and sharing our home with you.
From Derek: You are correct, I was very busy with school work and other projects and did not have much energy to converse as much as I would like. For this I apologize Aria. Thank you for your honesty, I will attempt to correct this lack of hospitality with future guests.
Allow us to begin with a quote directly from Rong on the morning she checked out. She stated, “It was great staying here. It was like being at an old friend’s house.” She also sat with our dog, Pearl, on the living room floor many evenings during her stay, and was happy to allow Pearl into the bedroom with her. We had every reason to believe Rong was having a positive experience. Needles to say, we were taken aback by her negative review.
We regret that during Rong’s stay the apartment was not kept up to its usual standard of cleanliness (as demonstrated by the consistency of all of our other reviews) and that this lessened her enjoyment of her stay (re-read quote above). However, it is important to keep in mind that when staying in a person’s house rather than a hotel, personal issues (aka life) may occasionally arise.
The relevance of my parents’ move was two-fold. First, I was spending a lot of time helping them pack which would normally have been spent keeping the house tidy, and Derek was unable to pick up the slack because he was slammed with schoolwork. Second, because my parents are moving into a smaller apartment, we were forced to take on a lot of family heirlooms and other cherished items that we had all hoped wouldn’t be passed on for a few more years. During this process we absorbed two pieces of furniture and at least five large boxes of stuff. As the house is small, it did take time to find a home for all of those things, during which time they were a bit more visible than we would have liked.
We might also reference our previous review of Rong, which addresses a portion of what could be said on the subject of her standards of cleanliness. As hosts, we have been very open to accepting new Airbnb users without reviews and try to view and review our guests with generosity. Unfortunately, we do not feel we have been given the same latitude from Rong.
