Hi / Hola! I am a native Californian (San Diego) living in Costa Rica with my daughter. My life vocation is real estate (since 1978). Along with our family home on the lagoon in Cardiff by the sea and several other rental homes, we own 100 acres of vineyard property in Temecula and now a small coffee plantation in Costa Rica. I have been in and out of Costa Rica for many years and have property in Manuel Antonio. Besides authoring Costa Rica Now, the all in one travel guide to Living and Owning in Paradise, I write interpretations of Asian Classics such as the Tao Te Ching. I am also a professional Costa Rica Consultant. Taoist and Buddhist kung fu and meditation are part of my self definition along with being a father which is job One. Having me host you is like having a personal Costa Rican consultant.
**** Contact me before you plan your trip and after you book your stay with us and I will steer you to great places to visit according to you length of stay in Costa Rica and what you would like to do here; surf, zip line, deserted beaches, white sand full service beaches, bird watching, hot springs, witnessing volcanoes and waterfalls and gem destinations off the beaten track,
Finally, I do not host people for the money. I host for the experience of meeting new people. You will find me engaging if you want to talk, or accommodating if you want to have your privacy. I think relationships are the most important and my guests make or break my experience with Airbnb.
***From Airbnb, "Airbnb is built on relationships. Help other people get to know you.Tell them about the things you like: What are 5 things you can’t live without? Share your favorite travel destinations, books, movies, shows, music, food. Tell them what it’s like to have you as a guest or host: What’s your style of traveling? Of Airbnb hosting? Tell them about you: Do you have a life motto?
*** Ok - so here goes - The five things I cannot live without would be:without would be:1 - Freedom, 2- Every day doing what I want to do, 3 - Friendship
4 - Living in nature. 5 - Writing
***I am a kung fu man who practiced and taught ancient Buddhist and Taoist choi li ho fut hung kung fu san soo for over 20 years and still live and learn according to kung fu concepts and Asian philosophy.
***By far my favorite movie is Casablanca as I am a romantic at heart.
***Favorite books? That is a hard choice. Of the ancient classics, I like Stephen Mitchell's translation of the Tao Te Ching and Miyamoto Musahshi's Book of Five Rings. I consider Loving What Is by Byron Katie to be a modern classic. Her practical approach to examining your thoughts creates freedom in your life. Indispensable reading if you actually practice what she calls "The Work."
***Life Motto? Well I am a kung fu man, so it would be the same as my kung fu teacher, "You can take my life, but you can never take my confidence and character." - Grand master of ancient kung fu, Jimmy H. Woo
***My epitaph: Here lies Phil Baker - father, friend, seeker of justice and finally ultimately free. He got things done in a most artful way.
***When I was a small child, I remember sitting on my uncle's lap and he sang to me - "Phil, Phil from San Juan Hill, Never worked and never will!" hahahaha well it affected me intuitively and I quickly learned that life is lived with great satisfaction if you cannot quite tell if you are working or playing. Then, and only then, work ceases to exist and you do what you want to do every day of your life. To me that is "the" definition of success, and to be in sync with the Tao.
