We spent two relaxing and very enjoyable nights at Kevin's house in Albion. The house is filled with collectables and curiosities, nestled in this wee village just south of Mendocino. It's an old house but very comfortable, artful and charming. It's unusual and suited our tastes well. Kevin was a great host, we were a last minute inquiry and he made it easy. I highly recommend Kevin's house if you don't need everything to work perfectly and enjoy artful unusual accommodations in a quiet coastal community.
Kevin's historic cottage was like taking a step back in time. We came late in the evening so everything was dark. We live in the city so the darkness was a big change. When we woke up in the morning it was beautiful. We could see the river and the bridge from the back deck. The bed's were very comfortable and there is a great big bath tub. The house is decorated of the time. Antiques and old stove. We enjoyed our stay and the best part was Kevin let us bring our dog, Dyllan who was in absolute heaven to get out of SF. Thanks again Kevin for a great stay.
We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage is exactly as presented: Rustic and charming. The location is wonderful; just off Highway 1, with a incredibly well-stocked mini-grocery story merely a hundred feet away.
The process of reserving, booking, arriving and departing were all smooth, efficient and trouble-free.
Thank you Kevin; our experience was perfect.
We booked Kevin's house for 3 nights but left after the first one. The house is very old just like Kevin describes it. Kevin clearly loves his family house and looks like many of his guests did as well. I am not going to dispute their feelings. We did not because of strong smell of mildew ( at least one other reviewer mentions this as well) and dirty sheets we found on the bed. No matter how old the house is, the sheets must be clean imho. There were other things with the house that we dealt with that I only mention for completeness: broken faucet, not working house phone that you are welcome to use, lack of power that I fixed by finding electrical box and flipping a breaker. These I am not complaining about but they are facts that you as a potential guest may need to deal with. The house only has a free standing tub and a hand held shower. This was not obvious to us based on description.
Kevin was very responsive over email in accomodating our last minute reservation as well as when we began experiencing issues. However, he turned accusational and simply isulting when I told him we had left mentioning the facts above. My opinion is that Kevin is a fine host if you share his love for the house but he would turn on you otherwise.
Kevin accommodated a last minute booking and made the check in very easy. The cottage is the perfect base to explore the beautiful Mendocino coast or to just relax on the exceptionally comfortable sofa with a cup of tea and a book.
We had the best time, we especially loved the bear claw bath tub that my wife and I were both able to fit in. The description was very accurate, exactly what they said it would be. We will be doing this every year, we absolutely loved it.
Really interesting od wooden house. Get the gas fire going at it quickly warms u and is really cosy. The beds are really comfortable, the local store just a few metres down the road is great and the food at the Ledford (a couple of hundred metres away) is awesome. We cooked in the house a few nights and the kitchen has all the utensils you need, but there is no prep space.
We did the 7 or 8 mile loop in Van Dam State Park which was easy and lovely, also if you are in Mendocino and want a bit of an antidote to all the relentlessly lovely boutiques go to Dick's Bar on Main St.- a great dive bar.
We really enjoyed our stay.
My boyfriend and I did a quick last minute getaway to Mendocino. I had contacted Kevin the day before to see if the place was available. He was very responsive and made sure all was ready for us. The house is quaint and a unique experience given the history and actual antiques. The yard is a bit overgrown and needs clean up, but Inside was neat and tidy. It was plenty of space for the two of us and our dog, which was a big bonus for this rental. It was perfect for a getaway and nice to have an entire place to ourselves. Having wifi was a bonus. We never used the TV and I'm glad it wasn't in the main room. It is a beautiful area and the pictures are pretty accurate. The deck on the back is marvelous for stargazing. It's incredibly peaceful and the number of stars you can see is spectacular. We obviously were blessed absolutely gorgeous weather in November!
The kitchen is very tiny and since I've never used an old stove, and given the antiques in the house, I was a little afraid of breaking stuff. So we used the place very sparingly.
Flashlights are a necessity if you go out at night as there are no lights in the front to help you to the door. It was a bit cold, but with the space heaters, we didn't have an issue.
The bathroom was surprisingly spacious and comfortable. However, I'd recommend bringing toilet paper and a roll of paper towels. Though you can get toilet paper at the local market, you'll pay for it ($10!). But the market is surprisingly stocked with everything you'll need.
We couldn't figure out how to walk down to the beach other than driving through the campground. So we ended up driving north and found three magnificent stops - one just before Mendocino, Mendocino (of course!), and a gorgeous beach just past Fort Bragg.
Kevin's place is a fun little old cottage just about the river in Albion. We had a cozy, good time. As others have said, the place has tons of character.
Have you ever stopped at one of those great, old antique shops in a little town and just wandered around aimlessly looking at things? Welcome to Kevin's cottage. We had a great time there--exactly what my boyfriend and I were in search of for a last-minute escape from the city. We were excited to find the availability on such short notice. Kevin was happy to oblige but made us aware that we would need to do some light tidying since he wouldn't have time to get it cleaned to which he would void the cleaning fee--fine by us! That night, we walked about .5 mi down the road to the Ledford for dinner and watched one of the most beautiful sunsets we'd ever seen. The food was pretty great as well. We returned to spend the rest of the night curled up on the couch reading next to the gas fireplace in the living room. **Note, this is an old house and gets chilly. There are plenty of space heaters, but be prepared. The next morning, we enjoyed a bit of sun on the back porch before tidying up and heading out.
We were recommended the Flats Cafe which is under the Albion bridge just down the road from the cottage and it was great. Doesn't get much more straight forward. The cafe doubles as the front office for the campground there where you can rent canoes and kayaks, which we did. HIGHLY recommend. There's a group of seals taking up residence there that are fun to see.
Overall, we had a great time. If you're looking for a unique and truly authentic old cottage, this is the place. Kevin was very communicative and helpful in getting us all the info we needed to enjoy our stay.
Kevin was a pleasure to have over. He was very easy to communicate with, left the place impecable, and was overall a very nice guy. Highly recommend.
Kevin was very thoughtful and helpful in communicating with us when he had to change plans at the last minute. We really appreciated his conscientiousness in thinking about us and our plans while trying to figure out his at the same time.
The very first time I met Kevin and David was the night my husband proposed. Kevin and David went out of their way to help my husband (who they had only recently become acquainted with) plan a beautiful surprise.
The first 6 months of our marriage were wrought with business and family problems and Kevin urged us to schedule our Albion weekend (his and David’s wedding gift to us).
And boy was he right! The moment we arrived at the cottage and took in the clean brisk coastal air we felt the stress melt away. We stepped inside and were transported to a time and place where we finally became two carefree newlyweds exploring our surroundings covered with centuries-old artwork, vintage furniture and collections, and nature.
Kevin and David have found and beautifully maintained a coastal retreat, a haven away from the mundane routine of a stressful life. They understand what a luxury peace of mind is and offer it to their guests.
Kevin is an incredibly generous man and he always makes sure you feel at home. My husband and I have stayed at he and David's Albion home and it is just beautiful. We felt so at home! Kevin came in and cooked for us for an entire day and the food was really incredible meal. Breakfast consisted of banana walnut waffles and fresh fruit and juices and a side of chicken apple sausage. It was all organic and wonderful. At our request, he returned and dinner consisted of fresh pork tenderloin with a sherry/apricot sauce, fresh greens, garlic mashed potatoes and for dessert----get this---homemade chocolate eclairs! What a fantastic meal! We will definitely be returning!
Kevin and I met through mutual friends and instantly hit it off as we share a love of nature, good food and our beloved DOGS! I have stayed at Kevin's Albion cottage several times and have always found Kevin to be fantastic to deal with. He is prompt and responsive in his communications, he is honest and easy going, and he is responsible and has great follow through.
Kevin is an incredibly generous, thoughtful, caring and therapeutic individual. I got to know him through our nursing program at ARC and enjoyed having him as a fellow classmate. In addition to his wonderful patient care, Kevin has amazing taste in home decor, beautiful gardening skills, and bakes the most delicious treats!
