I am from London and I am a cook, gardener & designer, all of my talents are pressed into service at Riad Idrissy & The Ruined Garden in Fez, Morocco.
My son (16) , daughter (13) and I stayed with Robert during our time in Fes and absolutely loved our stay.
From a North American perspective it is a dramatic cultural shift coming to Morocco; outside in the Medina and the souks can be hectic and a bit overwhelming (in a good way) and it was always nice to come back to the comforts (and quiet!) of the Riad while maintaining cultural immersion.
Our rooms were great as was the location in the heart of the medina and Robert was great to deal with both before and after our arrival offering suggestions about what we might like to see, do, and eat without any pressure.
We arranged to have Robert pick us up from the airport and for a walking tour on our arrival which made life a lot easier. It can be a little tricky to navigate the medina and souks the first time around and this allowed us to get our bearing.
The best surprise was Najia who brought us breakfast each morning which was freshly squeezed orange juice, a bowl of fresh fruit (we were not expecting the kiwi), as well as a selection of hot moroccan breads & crepes that were served with honey, a lemon coulis, jam and butter. I think these were my families favourite meals of the trip.
We all highly recommend the Riad Idrissy and the Ruined Garden and want to thank Robert and Najia (and the others) for their hospitality during our time in Fes.
Two colleagues and myself stayed for three nights in the upper bedroom of Robert's lovely medieval house in Fez. It was spectacular. The house is beautiful - with intricate tiling and authentic decorations. The upper bedroom was extremely comfortable (slept 3 easily) and had access to a rooftop terrace. We spent each evening listening to the call for prayer and watching the sunset over the white buildings of Fez.
Robert and his staff were friendly, efficient, and very helpful. They helped us arrange for a driver to Volubilis on our third day - and arranged for a cab to pick us up from the train station when we arrived. The cook (I forget her name) is really nice and talented. She made us a breakfast every morning with fresh fruit, coffee, and delicious fried bread. So good!
The Ruined Garden restaurant is incredible - we ended up eating there every night. It has lots of fresh vegetables and delicious tagine dishes. Plus, it is a nice option to have in case you don't want to walk around at night.
Overall, we had an amazing, restful time. We felt incredibly well taken care of & can't wait to return.
We absolutely loved everything about our stay at this riad with our host Robert! He was very welcoming, attentive and informative -- the essence of great hospitality. Attention to detail was incredible, and the riad staff is amazingly sweet and helpful. The riad and its restaurant are a delight to come back to after a wild day in the medina. Breakfasts are a highlight, with strong coffee, fruits, muesli, and more (a lot more) :) We can't recommend the top floor room highly enough, with its beautiful roof deck. We did not want to leave.
It's taken a week to come to terms with the fact we don't actually live in the penthouse of Riad Iddrissy full time, we could have gotten quite used to it!
Robert is a wonderful host, leaving plenty of space for you to do your own thing but always around if you want tips of places to go or assistance organising day trips. The wonderful atmosphere of the salon and gardens of the café downstairs make it tempting not to even venture out to explore the hundreds of tiny streets in the old medina but it was well worth it in the end.
Thanks to Robert and all the staff at Riad Idrissy for such a great few days.
We had an absolute fab time in Fez. Robert was fantastic, very helpful with directions and great advice on places to visit. He made us feel very welcome. The riad is beautifully decorated and the Ruined Garden Restaurant has a magical feel, the vegetarian tagine is defitely a must!
Highly recommend it!
Just a lovely stay on all counts. The location of the Riad is superb, having a restaurant there makes eating great food super easy and the owner/manager Robert takes the very best care of all of his guests with a welcoming, hospitable attitude. For sure give this spot the highest ratings!
This was one of the absolute highlights of our trip. We are more than happy to have found this wonderful location. Robert and the staff were great, the room was even better than we expected, the food was great. Thank you.
We had an amazing time. It’s a stunning spacious room in a beautiful building. Robert is really friendly and extremely helpful in recommending great places to eat and things to do. We loved the Ruined Garden restaurant next door. We would definitely come back and recommend to others.
The pictures do not do this sensitively restored riad or the penthouse with its magical air and views justice. Robert is the consummate host and his entire staff delightful. His adjoining restaurant, The Ruined Garden, was our best overall dining experience in Morocco. The service and food was five star, at much less than 5 star prices . Robert arranged for our seamless pick up and departure from the train and airport stations, for excursions, and for anything else we could possibly need. Robert is an excellent host and restauranteur. You're nuts if you don't stay here and get to know Robert and experience the exotic ambience of this place. We certainly plan to return.
Fantastic Riad and service. Robert was ready to help us with anythign; from directions to taxi reservatiosn. He was a very weloming host, he even welcomed us personally at 5:30am when we arrived. The place is beautiful and the food great. Everything is very clean and organized. I highly recommend it to anyone and will certainly come again in the future.
