My husband and I moved to DC from NYC about 3 years ago, and last year bought our 1880s home in lovely Capitol Hill.
This apartment is AMAZING! Its location is just incredible, right on Capitol Hill. Just a few minutes from Congress. We fell in love with it instantly. Ellen was an incredible host and really kind and welcoming. It's SUPER, SUPER clean, recently redone and a really nice space. There's a big double bed plus an airbed for extra guests, loads of space. The TV doesn't have cable but it does have Netflix which was perfect for us! Less than 10 mins to the subway but the location is so great you won't even need the subway that much. We really couldn't recommend this place enough. Thank you.
Our 4-day stay in DC at Ellen's garden apt was great. The place was newly remodeled , quiet, comfortable and best of all, it's convenient to the Capital, the Smithsonian, and the Metro stop (3 blocks). The neighborhood had an ample choice of bars, taverns, and cute shops, plus on the weekend, there was a fun "flea market" with fruits n veggies, jewelry, crafts, and stand after stand of browsing. No need for a car. This was our first Airbnb, and we are very encouraged to try again.
Ellen's basement studio apartment is ultra-clean, tastefully but simply furnished/decorated and well-situated, in a quiet and safe residential enclave just a few blocks from the US Capitol building on the Hill, within easy reach (short walk) of a subway station. Air-conditioned, comfortable, great shower, spotless kitchenette, we would definitely stay here again. Ellen was very responsive and went above and beyond to help us sort out parking by obtaining a temp permit for us from the local police station - she gets 100 stars, stay here if you can, well worth the price for DC!
This was my first Airbnb experience and I loved it! Ellen has an adorable studio apartment in the best possible location for seeing the sights in DC. We walked everywhere, and with the central location were able to come back to the apartment when we needed to during the day. The apartment is immaculate and well appointed. The bed was comfortable and it was so quiet we did not feel we were in a city at all. Great shower and the washer and dryer were appreciated so we could leave with the laundry done. I would definitely stay here again.
Great location, beautiful neighborhood, spotlessly clean studio apartment...all the ingredients for a delightful stay in DC. Best of all, Ellen is an outstanding host. She graciously shares her knowledge and enthusiasm, answering all our questions about the area. I look forward to visiting often.
It was our first time to America and this was our first stop so we were exhausted and excited. Due to our mobiles not working in this country we missed the email asking us to arrive later in the day. We had travelled for 36 hrs and were happy to have found our way to the address. We received a "black" look from this host who wanted things to run according to her plans. We quickly offered to disappear up the street to kill time while she cleaned up after some aberrant piggy Belgians. We worked at ensuring we got back at requested time (5pm) but found the conversation to be mainly around her. Would have been nice to have been asked about our extremely long journey or be welcomed. The flat is clean and comfortable but no block out curtains. We got a note on the door that password for internet had changed. This meant we had no internet when my son became ill. Host was not at home either so it was rather a disaster as I had relied on internet and found it hard to get help in this rather unfriendly Capitol Hill. I am accustomed to neighbours helping each other in Australia. If you want an experience of "Bowling Alone" by Zymunt Bauman then visit this area of DC. Others I have spoken to have found it to be arid and unfriendly as well. Perhaps if the host eventually has children she might become less "superior" and kinder. The son who was not ill, ran around cleaning while I sought some medical help. It was an awful experience that could have been avoided if the host had taken a modicum of interest in our welfare. She runs it like a hotel but even then, hotels have receptionists. Why she had to change the (already unreliable) internet on our second last day, I don't know. It didn't work after that. Before that it only worked in one spot due to plumbing (she had told us that) I realise that when fresh to a new country, those first impressions really count. So important to be welcomed. When we did return at the requested time, our cases were still standing out in the sun. Would have been nice if she'd just tucked them across the threshold. Might have felt as though she wanted us there. The dog scratched and banged its leg on the floor a lot the first night which disturbed my sleep. The host walks like a baby elephant upstairs but these small things wouldn't matter if there had been a feeling of hospitality. Would never visit DC again. Smithsonian would have been great in its day but tired now. Same can be said for most of what we saw. I wrote a personal email to host explaining all this but got no response so decided to express it in the review. A sad entry to our much anticipated trip.
This studio really has a great location; the most important monuments of Washington are at walking distance. Everything in the studio is also brand new. For four people it is feasible but a little tight since you also have only one room.
Lovely apartment! Perfect location, 25 minute walk to the mall, close to restaurants and shopping. I stayed for 8 days and was very comfortable. Only small irritant was quirky internet which also affected the TV but not a huge problem.
Ellen is incredibly nice. The apartment is in a picturesque neighborhood with all sorts of great restaurants within walking distance. The apartment itself was spotless. I would love to stay there again.
We loved Ellen's apartment! The neighborhood was adorable and historic, a very short walk from the subway and within blocks of a bikeshare station. She was warm and welcoming and very communicative throughout and responded very quickly to any questions we had. The apartment itself was clean and well-quipped/ A great home-base for exploring D.C., with capitol and an amazing weekend market nearby. Try Tortilla Cafe if you're looking for a casual, cheap quick bite -- delicious S. American food in very close proximity.
