My husband and I booked this cottage for 15 days to celebrate our Babymoon. After the payment went through Krista, the groundskeeper let us know that Leonard, the owner of the property would be staying at the main house for 9 days. I was in talks with her about various things and she was super friendly and informative. I asked about the local weather and she said that it was beautiful and hadn't rained much.. if anything it's only in the afternoon. You get there by a windy road which was a surprise. When we got there it was disappointing to find out that the main house is feet away from the cottage. All the windows were opened and two fans were going inside. I looked around for an AC but couldn't find one. I texted Krista to see if it was hiding anywhere and she confirmed there wasn't. She suggested if we got hot to take a dip in the ocean. My husband and Krista started texting and he told her that I am pregnant and that this heat was becoming too much for us to bear so she brought down a fan. We now had 4 going blowing hot air around. There was mention that Leonard wasn't going to stay as long as he originally planned and that if we wanted, she would try to get us into the main house. She said to get back on Airbnb to book the reservation and pay the difference. There was no mention of this again. On the 4th day of our stay, we finally texted Krista to let her know that we couldn't take it any longer and that we were leaving early. She pretty much said she "hoped we find something better" and that was the end of it. We packed up our stuff and left. In all, 1) Her comment about the rain was downplayed and misleading. A local mentioned that this town was the "rain belt" because of how much rain they got on a daily basis. It rained every single day we were there, starting anywhere from 11am-1pm through the rest of the night. 2) She let us know after we made payment that the owner was going to be on the property for more than half our stay. This property has a "strict" cancellation/refund policy so if I wanted to cancel, I'd lose half my money. How is that fair? 2) No AC was never mentioned through messages or on the property overview page. 3) The road to this property was extremely twisty and windy, like mountain roads. Hugely inconvenient if you're going to and from the house multiple times a day. A heads up about this would've been appreciated. 4) Not being able to relax at the place we paid an arm and a leg for because it's hotter inside the house than out is just ridiculous. 5) Her "offering" to upgrade us at our own cost was insulting.
A perfect place in a perfect location! Just steps away from the ocean. This adorable little bungalow will exceed all your expectations and surpass your needs. You can goto bed with the sound of the waves lapping against the shore...
I was lucky to stay here for three weeks and nearly cried when leaving.
Krista was exceedingly helpful, cheerful, and wonderful.
I can't wait for an excuse to return!
Dolphin Bay Cottage is a lovely quaint open concept hideaway tucked amongst lush flowering trees and shrubs that delight the eye. The location is superb. Only a two minute walk past scented plumeria bushes to the crystal clear waters of Kealakekua Bay where we snorkelled with a multitude of irridescent colored fish that combed the coral reefs. Another day we rented a double kayak just down the road and paddled to Capt. Cook Monument on the other side of the bay where we encountered a pod of playful dolphins. It took a few minutes to drive down the road to the next bay at The Place of Refuge which was fascinating. We saw a rare Monk Seal languishing on the sand of an ancient village.
A truly magical and beautiful place to relax and rejuvenate.
Thank you Martha and Leonard for sharing this wonderful place.
Martha is a very conscientious person because of this she and Leonard, her husband, take excellent care of their house in Hawaii. They are very receptive to the needs of their guests. Martha and Leonard love to be outside and to be active. That's why their house on the Big Island is the perfect get away for an active traveler. They both love to swim and snorkel. Some of my favorite memories are visiting the Big Island and kayaking with the dolphins by their house. I always feel relaxed and happy in the space they have created. You too will feel the same if you stay at Dolphin Bay House!
