Casa Baleia is a perfect spot for those looking for an out of the way house that has magical views over the surrounding area. The fact that the house is on a hill blesses it with a wonderful cool breeze that provides a welcome respite from the tropical heat. The house is very rustic though but it has everything that you require. We really enjoyed our stay there.
Our host, Orlando, who looks after the running of the house, made us feel very welcome from the first day we arrived, and continued to do so during the rest of our stay. The house was as described, and was just what we were looking for i.e. close enough to Tofo Beach to drive there in less than 10 minutes, but far enough away from the bustle of the nightlife there so that our 11-month-old baby wouldn’t have to be disturbed.
Francesco arrived every morning to help tidy up and with anything else we may have needed e.g. helping us open the oysters we bought on a whim, which were delicious, by the way!
The people of Tofo and Tofinho were so friendly, the food delicious, and the beaches stunning. We cannot express enough how much we enjoyed our stay, and will no doubt be returning for more of the same. Thank you!
The views from the house were absolutely brilliant and the instructions and responses to queries in advance very helpful. Highly recommended.
Jacques has a great pad on the dune-tops over looking the Indian Ocean. We watched humpback whales frolicking every day in total seclusion. The place is simple and rustic, but homely enough. I would recommend bringing a few basics with you; toilet paper, soap etc as these are not supplied.
Fransisco, the local helper, was great at keeping the place tidy during our stay.
We organised a 4WD to drop us and our luggage off, but were quite happy walking into town and back each day (~20 minutes on the road, 30-40mins along the beach).
It was a fabulous location to chill out, relax and soak up the amazing view.
Thanks for your feedback (not pedantic at all), I'll get Francisco to get those in place for the next guests..
We had an amazing holiday in Tofinho - idyllic location - you could see whales and dolphins from the verandah and we loved every minute of it.
We (group of 5) had a great week at Casa Baleia. The house is definitely a must for anyone who enjoys seeing the sunrise, sunset or stargazing. It is also close to an almost secluded and private beach (even though you'll have to go up and down in the dunes a bit) where you'll be able to enjoy the sun and take a bath in the warm Indian Ocean.
Francisco, the housekeeper, was (as all of the Tofo people actually) really humble and eager to help. He helped us pick and prepare fish and lobster that we bought from local fishermen that came around every morning and did all the dishes and cleaning.
The bedrooms were spacey and there was no lack of space in any way. Anyone who gets scared from some nature going around (as in small insects, small geckos) should be aware that it's a possibility. For us, it wasn't a deal breaker in any way though.
As for the host, Jacques was extremely helpful, provided us with an extremely detailed and helpful house manual and proved to be ready to help us in any way we required, whether by answering our questions or by putting us in touch with anyone who could.
Overall, we were extremely happy with the experience and would definitely like to go back some day. The house is just what you'd imagine when you think of a tree house, on top of a dune, looking at an amazing view.
We had an unforgettable time at Casa Baleia. The house was spacious enough for the 6 of us. No other house in Tofinho, Inhambane has this incredible view from the deck and all other corners of the house. The best place in the area for sunrise, sunset and star gazing. The backdoor beach closest to the house is perfect and one is completely undisturbed. If you do not like the noise of all those four wheel bikes make and bad loud techno music from neighbours and other commercial places, then this location is total bliss. Air conditioning was not necessary and mosquitoes were very rarely seen or felt. Jacques was a great host and we would not mind visiting again and again. Thank You.
We had a wonderful week staying in Casa Baleia, Tofo. The house is exactly what we were looking for. Perched on top of a sand dune with magnificent views over Tofino beach and the Indian Ocean. Our host was very organised and made sure our stay was flawless. The house keeper and night guard were very friendly and a pleasure to meet. I would highly recommend this place. We will certainly go back if we get the chance!
It was great chilling on the deck and we spent hours just watching the sea (spectacular view!), and we saw many whales. The house is on the edge of Tofo, so it's in nature away from the bustle of town, but close enough for going for a quick drink.
Staff was very friendly and did all the dishes and cleaning. We gave Francisco some money and he brought us some fresh Pao from his village also.
Jacques is a great host and is very helpful with tips and information before the stay.
The place is beautiful and rustic. I would highly recommend a visit to Casa Baleia,
This place is GREAT! The view from the porch is spectacular. We would watch whales in the distance as we had breakfast each morning. One of the people that stayed at the house kept saying the place was very "Robinson Crusoe."
The house has plenty of space. We were two couples and a friend.. there was a bedroom for each couple and the friend had the loft space all to himself. The common space is also a comfy place to hang out after a nice day at the beach. There's a large, fully equipped kitchen. (And even a solar powered hot water heater that provided plenty of hot water for all five of us!)
Jacques is also great! Even from before we arrived, he was very helpful. He gave us tips on where to catch waves, where to go snorkeling, who to contact to swim with whale sharks.. and even a few tips about buying local fish. Jacques also has a couple of associates in Tofo that are very helpful in his absence. Fransisco, the caretaker of the house was very friendly and seemed eager to help.
I will be going back and will certainly recommend the place to my friends.
I have visited Jacques' property in Mozambique and he has built it at a beautiful location on the beach with a clear panoramic view of the sea. He is a very friendly host who will guide you around the places to see. Carry a good pair of binoculars and you may be lucky to see the whales in the sea.
