Response from Lesley:
Hi Karen - I don't sleep all day, but I did need the option of sleeping past 7:30am and having at least some peace and quiet at some point between the hours of 7:30am-8pm - especially after working until 3am. Anyone visiting a city for any reason and renting a flat or hotel would want that, it's not an unusual or unreasonable expectation! The jackhammering was not in the basement it was the ground floor and it was incessant and unbearably loud for 12 hours a day, with no relief. As you know from the audio files I sent you it was the type / volume of noise that shook the walls and was so loud and invasive that I could not hear the speakers on my own laptop (or the TV) even with noise cancelling headphones on or talk on the phone. No one wants to endure that, regardless of their work / sleep schedule. Your place was cute and sufficient and in a good location, and without the construction it would have been fine - but my point is that I should have been told BEFORE I BOOKED that this was happening directly below your flat and that it would cause a significant disturbance. The porter even told me it was unbearable for him and other tenants and that it had been going on for quite some time and would continue for another couple of months. I had many options when booking and all offered a similar price, but you did not provide all the information and that is where my issue lies. I had a right to know ahead of time what situation I was walking into / paying for - and you knew what I was in town for and what kind of work I do before I booked, which makes it worse in my opinion. So while I appreciate the gesture of the additional days, I don't appreciate being misled in the first place and it doesn't make up for having to endure that level of discomfort and disruption for the entire stay, and then being told it's 'too bad about my work schedule' and blaming me for working hours that don't coincide with building construction that I was entirely unaware of until it was too late. With any work schedule, it would not have been ok. You witheld information to get the booking, and that is simply unfair.
Also, re: the cleaning - I didn't do the dishes before I left because I paid a cleaning fee to stay! (I also had to vacuum the bathroom floor - which was covered in hair - and clean the bathroom when I arrived, so I was not too fussed about cleaning before I left as well, especially after an exhausting stay).
