Host - Michael proved to be a great host throughout planning and booking, kept in touch with us during our stay, and was very helpful in general. Although we did not meet in person, he arranged a smooth check-in, check-out and airport transfer for us.
Apartment - as described, clean with all equipment fully functional. The only negative aspect is the street noise - the earplugs came handy -, and the mattress on the bed could be replaced. Neighborhood is serviced by the B and Q trains providing easy access to Manhattan.
Michael was very communicative prior to arrival and during our stay. The apartment was perfectly located for us in Flatbush, just blocks from our friends and the subway. The B & Q lines got us to all the places we need to get to over the weekend (Meatpacking, Lincoln Center, Town Hall, even the Museum of Natural History). The apartment was nicely decorated and clean. There was a fair amount of street noise, but it's the city, and the apartment is on Flatbush, so it was to be expected.
The bed was quite a bit softer than our mattress at home, but that's more of a preference than a complaint.
All in all we'd booked this place again for Michael's hospitality and the convenience of staying in Brooklyn.
I am very sad to have to write a negative review here, considering all the lovely reviews Michael has received. I'm sorry to say that me and my friend have not had the same experience, which is very disappointing.
Firstly, two weeks before our holiday I was informed that Michael would not be meeting us upon our arrival to Brooklyn as we had expected and that he would instead be posting the keys to me in London. I was concerned about this- that should here be any problems (e.g., not being able to get into the apartment) there would be no one there to help. I was assured that there were contingencies in place if any such problems should occur and was sent a video of how to work the lock.
However, shortly after we arrived, the fuse in the apartment went, and we were left without electricity. Michael was out of town and after numerous (and expensive!) phone calls he suggested sending an electrician to us the next morning (thankfully I had packed a torch!). The next day when we had not heard from Michael or an electrician, we left the flat in search of wifi, only to see an email from Michael saying he was heading to the flat- to which we returned to find that the problem had been resolved by pushing the fuse back in in the basement (which we did not have a key to). This would have been resolved much sooner if Michael had been there, or if there was a point of contact for us in New York (or at least a phone in the apartment to save us the extortionate phone bill).
Needless to say the situation created a lot of stress and inconvenience as we were unable to do anything but wait around and worry for the first two days of an already short, expensive and much looked forward to holiday.
Other than this, the apartment was adequate for our needs and Michael was friendly and helpful once he had arrived and offered to refund our first night.
Since we have returned home we have had more problems- after seeing how much the calls made to and from Michael came to- £50 (approx $80) we requested that Michael kindly contribute to this cost in addition to first night refund. He has refused this, claiming the ‘electrical snafu’ was inconvenient to him too. To us this was not a ‘snafu’ as he terms it- but a very upsetting start to our holiday. We have accepted the first night refund (minus charges) to put this whole situation behind us. I'm very disappointed.
After this experience, I will without a doubt book a hotel next time.
I can assure you I will not be using Airbnb again.
I'm so sorry you were left with hard feelings.
Michael was such a terrific host. He was kind and thoughtful in his communication each and every step of the way. The apartment was cozy, had air-conditioning (which is quite a relief for a humid NYC summer night), and plenty of power strips to accommodate all of our modern electronic devices. There are also ear plugs to help drown out the street noise. I loved the decor - even though Michael wasn't actually there, I felt like I was staying with a kind, well-read, good-hearted soul.
Caveat: This is not for everyone. It's a 3rd story walk up in an old building which looks over a noisy street. I grew up working class and have lived in cities all my life, so I didn't mind it, but my upper-middle-class suburban girlfriend from west coast had a few issues. If you're looking for updated "modern convenience" you might not be thrilled.
Michael was a fantastic host - lots of tips about where to eat and shop, ideas for nice walks and beautiful views. He was friendly, accommodating, and helpful when needed - always a text message away! The apartment was great - perfect size for my partner and I, comfy bed, nice view, clean and in good working order. It is located right near the Q line which is great for a quick trip into Manhattan or a short walk to many cool Brooklyn neighbourhoods. I highly recommend staying here!
Michael's apartment was perfectly positioned for seeing Brooklyn and getting into Manhattan with easy access to the subway. It is a short walking distance (5-10 mins) from Prospect Park, The Brooklyn Botanic Garden and a longer walk to the Brooklyn museum. It is an attractive place that is surprisingly airy so we hardly needed the air conditioner. If you're looking for an authentic New York experience, then this place is great. It is big enough for a single person or a couple and has all the amenities you need. You will get street noise, but that is all part of the authentic experience and Michael has thoughtfully provided ear plugs.
Michael was a really good host, with some great recommendations for places to eat and left clear written instructions for the apartment. We were also greeted with a bottle of wine which was much appreciated! We would recommend people to stay at Michael's apartment.
Michael was a great host. Very helpful before we arrived and provided us with great tips on interesting things to see around the area. He was very friendly and patient when meeting us to drop off the keys even though we were delayed. The apartment was clean and the area is safe but still lively with great restaurants and Prospect Park is only a few minutes was away. A big plus is coney island is only a 20minute subway ride away.
Micheal ist ein sehr netter, hilfsbereiter Gastgeber. Das Apartment ist auch in Ordnung, es entspricht dem Preis- Leistungsverhältnis und liegt sehr nah an der Ubahn.
Michael and his place was absolutely great! As everyone else agrees, Michael was by far the best host I've encountered. He was always trying to help us with our convenience and comfort. The house was clean, cozy and welcoming. (He even had a bowl of fruit for us :) We'd definitely go back, no doubt. Thanks Michael!
As mentioned in the other reviews, Michael is an extremely helpful and thoughtful host. He kept in touch promptly before and during my stay, and was very flexible with my very tight schedule for picking up the keys. The studio is clean and nicely organized, making great use of the space and quite cozy to spend time in. As the weather was quite warm, I had to sleep with the window open but the ear plugs totally blocked out the sound. The apartment is also very close to a subway station, making it easy to access both downtown Brooklyn as well as Manhattan. A good, budget-friendly option for a stay in NYC.
It's so easy to recommend Michael and Leigh because they are the ideal guests! They appreciated the unique character of the cabin, enjoyed the local offerings, fit right into the pace of the desert and left the unit in impeccable condition. Besides that, they are lovely people who communicate well, have interesting things to say and are very considerate. (they even separated the recyclables from the trash) I would have them back in a heartbeat, with pleasure.
Michael was a fabulous guest - communicative, thoughtful and barely left a footprint! I highly recommend renting to him - and I plan to rent his listing this summer.
It was nice to have Michael and company with us, they left the unit in great conditions, I absolutely recommend them and hope their visit very soon, thank you very much, Linda
Michael and Lee were fabulous guests. They were both interesting and interested. They struck a perfect balance between guest and friend. I would open my home again to them any time.
Michael and his significant other were lovely guests
They were quiet and neat and self sufficient
They washed extra dishes from other guests and shared food they prepared. They are welcome back anytime.
