I'm Maltese, even though I live between Malta and Italy. I love travelling and getting to know people from different cultures and that is why I joined Airbnb.... I would like people to get to know the Maltese culture:)!
I stayed in Clo's apartment for five nights this past week. The positives: The apartment was clean, comfortable, and well-equipped (the coffee, bottled water, and biscuits were much appreciated), exactly as it had been described on this site. Clo is a great host. She responded promptly to my questions, was flexible about my date changes, and was very helpful, with good recommendations for bars, restaurants, and cafes. Although she was away while I was there, she arranged for a friend to meet me with the key, which could not have been easier. The best thing about the apartment is certainly the location. As others have said, it is only a short walk to the bus terminal and to the gates of Valletta. Very convenient, and also very quiet and safe.
The only negative comment I have is what others have remarked on as well. The pervasive dampness and smell of mildew was hard to deal with. I think it must be worse in winter; it was noticeably worse after it rained one night. I ended up keeping the kitchen and stairway door closed to keep the smell and damp from rising up from the basement; I also closed off the small bedroom door and pulled a rug over one of the floor grates, which also helped. It is unfortunate, because the apartment would otherwise be perfect. The moisture in the air kept things feeling a bit damp, and on the first day, apparently the upstairs bathroom had just been cleaned, and a pool of water stood on the floor, not evaporating, until I mopped it up with several towels the next morning. I did keep the door to the smoking area open most of the time (except when it was too cold or raining outside), which helped. I wonder if a dehumidifier in the basement might be a good idea. The AC/heater unit in the dining room might have that option, I am not sure, but since it would have blown out cold air, I didn't think to check. Anyway, despite the dampness/mildew issue, I noticed that the linens and furniture all smelled very fresh and clean and evidently get aired out regularly. I slept very well and comfortably in the apartment.
We had a very nice time on Malta, however I want to be honest. I do not think this apartment is the best choice for a stay in February. I cannot speak for any other time but I want to name some things I was struggeling with:
1.The cold - there seemed to be no way to heat the apartment and since it is a solid stone building with no windows to open the inside temperature was far below the outside temperature which made it not very cozy
2.The dampness - it made the cold a lot worse, plus it is not so nice to put on damp cold clothes in the morning. The book I kept in the bedroom is all in waves now.
3.The mold - due to the moisture, this old house has a problem with mold, visible and smellable. Both my boyfriend and I had trouble sleeping.
4.The Millipedes/Centipedes - I asked around and this seems to be a problem with old houses and also of this particular season.
It is called the black portuguese millipede and we had few until up to 20 of those visiting us inside the flat each day.
The basement shower did not work but the upstairs one was very nice and generally the flat is quite clean. Also the location is great, and i loved the sandwich store next door.
However because of said reasons I would not choose to stay here again.
Claudette' s appartamment is very nice and it's near la Valletta centre. The best comfort is bus terminal.
The apt is nice, and convenientely located to stay in Valletta
but in the winter is too humid and cold. this is a problem common in the island to many apts, but if you want to choose this apt in January thinks twice.
In summer I suppose there wont be this problem, and the apt can welcome a lot of people in a warm atmosphere. I enjoyed the humidity and the cold alone :)
Claudette's apartment, a stone's throw from Renzo Piano's new city gate, is the perfect place from which to explore Valletta. On the ground floor of a traditional Maltese building of honeyed stone, the rooms are set around a central courtyard which has fitted with a glass roof to provide a spacious dining room. The master bedroom is spacious, the second bedroom more suited to a single, the kitchen was well equipped. Claudette arranged a taxi to collect us from the airport, and - since she was in Gozo - we were met by a friend who was very helpful. Floriana (the neighbourhood) is a lovely place to stroll and relax. NB: The free Internet connection is via a 3G USB dongle, so streaming TV or music would be difficult.
Situation très proche du centre de Valetta, dans une rue calme.
Appartement calme, dans la tradition locale (pierre apparente)
Equipement ménager complet - Très propre
A recommander pour visiter la ville, ses environs et les iles.
amazing spot in malta, don't miss it...;) the apartment is combination of perfect location, very modern still of architecture ,super price and lovely host...no doubt this is the best stop in valletta ..cheers and all the best.....ivo....
All worked out easy and smooth. The Apt was very nice and comfortable. Very short way into Valletta - brilliant!
Thanks so much!
Claudette's property is spacious and bright and is ideally located right next to Valettas main bus terminus and the old town and is a refreshing blend of Maltese stone architecture with a modern decor. Her attentiveness to making sure our needs were catered for was superb and her constant communication was refreshingly reassuring.
We spent some beautiful days in Claudette's nice Apartment. The flat is ideally located near Valetta and you definitely do not need longer then 5 minutes until you'll reach everything you might need for shopping sightseeing, eating, main bus stop and everything else. Even a big parking lot is situated right in front of the house – good for those who come with a rental car, like we did.
You will feel at home quickly. Everything was set up and clean. Internet, TV, fridge, large bedroom, spacious living room – everything good. Only weak point for us (like for others) was the moisture in the air and some parts of the wall. In addition the are no windows and thus the apartment is located at the ground floor, you'll have no chance to let in some fresh air. Thats probably the main problem. Even the cellar is not really usable because of the points I already mentioned. Anyway – you don't come to Malta to stay inside all day and using the air con helped a little.
We had unfortunately no chance to meet Claudette personally but her friend Francesca was there to hand us the keys and advise us on everything regarding the apartment.
All in all I would recommend the apartment for those who like to stay near Valetta and just need the flat for sleep – for those who appreciate to stay longer in the flat itself you carefully have to balance your reasons because of the things I mentioned above.
Claudette and Matteo Buneos been two friends who have come home, and those who have lived two days magnificent, although less than we agreed that we would like because of our work schedules and sightseeing, we have shared moments home to talk and tell us a little experiences of our lives ... two guys are great, very nice and fun to any would be happy to receive them at home, highly recommended
Claudette was a great guest, i didn't see her much, because her stay was quick. She and her friend were very kind, clean and respectful . I recomend them to any host and hope to see them back in Barcelona.
