My wife and I spent a weekend in Kansas City and stayed with Greg for two nights. We picked this house because of the location and because it is one of the unusual limestone buildings characteristic of the Valentine neighborhood. This was a carriage house built in 1900. It is adjacent to the main house and is on a four acre site close to both downtown and the Plaza. The carriage house has been modified for regular living space but the original set up is obvious. For example, there is a large doorway on the main floor. Horses were walked up a ramp and through the door to go out front. The house has not been renovated in some time, so don’t expect accommodations like the Hilton.
Greg is very personable and we found a remarkable number of connections with mutual acquaintances. Dini the dog was quite friendly. We were five minutes from the Kauffman Center where we went to two performances as well as the National World War I museum and one our old and one of our new favorite restaurants.
Greg and Dini (his dog) are excellent hosts! I visited for three nights while participating in a conference held at the Crown Center. Greg was able to print out a bus plan for me and otherwise help me figure out the--somewhat inscrutable--KC public transportation system so that I could ride to and from the conference each day. He also drove me around downtown on the first day in order to give me a sense of the area. We ended up heading out that night to Arthur Bryant's--a local landmark--for a KC barbecue dinner. Greg had fruit, bagels and coffee ready for me for breakfast each morning. I had to leave early each morning and came back late some nights, but this was never a problem. In general, Greg is a very relaxed, very helpful and very funny guy.
(Hou)dini is a sweet and very well-mannered dog. She sometimes barks when someone comes to the door, but is otherwise entirely laid back. She doesn't even jump up on people.
The Carriage House itself is an interesting, old, nineteenth century building that used to be a barn and stable. Greg has decorated it with metal knick-knacks recovered from the stable as well as a lot of wooden antique furniture. Despite the many lamps, the common area can get a bit dark both during the day and at night, though that didn't bother me. My room and bathroom themselves were well-lit, a bit old-looking, but clean. The bed was very comfortable. Using my Ipad, I was not able to get wi-fi in my room--the router, I believe, is on the other side of the house--but was always able to access the network from the common area. Otherwise, the connection was easy to use and fast.
The house is located near the Thomas Hart Benton home (Benton was a famous painter) in what is apparently KC's "historic district" (as is advertised in numerous street signs). The Carriage House is a bit back from the road, which made it hard to find at first, but Greg was able to give me solid directions. The neighborhood is filled with charming old houses, and feels pretty safe. It's about a 4-5 block hike to the nearest bus stop, but I was always able to get there in about ten minutes. Q39, a quality barbecue restaurant, is located a few blocks south of Greg's place.
In conclusion, staying with Greg was definitely one of the high points of my stay in KC, and really demonstrated to me (a first-time user of Airbnb) what is great about the Airbnb experience.
Greg is a very gracious host and a super nice guy. Interesting and entertaining describes the house, the grounds, the neighborhood, and the host. A great place to stay for anyone traveling with a notion to eat well and see the city. Lots of great places to go within walking distance; enjoy it!
Staying at the carriage house felt like being in the country even though it's less than 10 minutes from Union Station. I was attending an all-weekend event at Union Station and Greg was accommodating to the odd hours that entails. I found the house organized and accommodations well prepared, making my stay pleasant and without surprise.
The neighborhood was very nice and central. The carriage house was very interesting - full of antiques - and quite comfortable. Greg was a friendly and helpful host. He provided a good combination of privacy and sociability and I had everything I needed. A very positive experience for a two-night stay. I felt right at home.
Greg was a super host, and the carriage house is amazing. At times, I felt like I was staying on a wildlife refuge with the sounds of owls and cardinals outside. Dini, Greg's dog, is laid back and well trained as any dog I've ever observed. I'm not a dog owner myself, but I found Dini to be very friendly.
The location of the residence is great too. Near the Nelson-Atkins and Kemper, and not too far from the Crossroads neighborhood. I would definitely recommend Greg's place to anyone wanting to spend some time in KC. It's a great mix of seclusion and access to urban delights.
I greatly enjoyed staying here for a week. Greg is a wonderful host, full of knowledge about Kansas City, and was very helpful in making sure I was comfortable. The house is gorgeous and spacious, and even has an interesting history as a carriage house. Even Greg's dog is nice! Definitely recommend staying here.
Beautiful house, super-nice host (and dog!). We enjoyed our stay so much that we were tempted to just relax in the house rather than go out and see Kansas City -- and that's a rarity for us, we're typically very active vacationers. Greg was a gracious host who offered good coffee and good conversation. We hope to see him again!
I had a fantastic stay at Greg's home and would definitely do so again the next time I'm in KC. He's a kind, thoughtful host who went out of his way to make sure I was welcomed and well taken care of.
Our stay at the Carriage House was very nice. Greg is an all around nice guy and interesting to talk with. His place is beautiful and he was very helpful with ideas on things to do and also giving directions to the places we wanted to go. Our overall experience could not have been better.
