M.A.'s house is in a great location, and I can't recommend her and her house enough.
For a first time visit to Portland, I am grateful I chose to stay with M.a. To compliment the home I must say that anyplace that still utilizes skeleton keys to lock doors is most definitely the place for me. This was an old house that creeks with every step and I loved it. Our room provided sufficient space to place our luggage and belongings and the bed was a huge pillow top to just plop down, rest and drink in the spectacular view of the city. We didn't spend much time in the house because we made a date with some fish tacos, but the time we did spend it was clean and welcoming. We were fortunate enough to make a last minute reservation with M.a. and she gladly accepted and had accommodations ready for us by the time we arrived. Such a kind and warm hearted Woman she is. She accepted myself, girlfriend and dog and gave us excellent references to the restaurants down the street. I would most definitely stay again.
Although a lapse in communication nearly soiled the experience, Mary Anne went above and beyond by offering to reimburse us for the trouble. The room was not what we had thought we were getting, but the alternative was a bed and what turned out to be a good night's rest. The home is charming and inviting, the neighborhood holds plenty to do and see, and M.A. herself happened to be a very friendly host.
M.A.'s place is in a perfect location if you are looking for a place to stay in NW Portland's Nobhill neighborhood. Close to shops, restaurants , bars, parks and light-rail to downtown. M.A. is a friendly and easy going host and the room we stayed in was more than large enough for ourselves and our 7 year old son. The house has a lot of "old Portland" character. We will definitely consider this place again for our next stay in Portland.
Not fancy, not the best bathrooms, but can't beat the location. Stayed a 2nd time and was comfortable. Not 5 stars this time because bathtubs didn't look clean.
I am going to try and sandwich this review, but just to be up front we had a pretty awful experience.
The location is very nice, a lot of nice shops and restaurants in the area.
We had three overwhelmingly bad experiences with the accommodations though:
1. The toilet upstairs near our room wasn't working and was full of- well - you know.
2. One of our pillows on the bed smelled strongly of cat urine.
3. There was a set of keys just left in the front door for hours- until I finally took them out. There was no security with that.
On the positive, the cafe downstairs serves up an awesome breakfast.
We may go back to that cafe, but we won't be gong back to M.A. Anderson's.
This is an older musty house with poor plumbing. The host is not very communicative/responsive. If you want the room with white couches around the bed be sure to let her know or she'll just put you wherever, as she did us, even though there's another listing for the other room. We didn't see the host during our stay and with her lack of response it was a little uneasy for us, like we snuck into someone's house and slept in their bed. She left a key in envelope on front door but was present the whole time. The pillows in the room were stained as well as the sheets and there was cat urine in the bed. There also isn't very much parking. FYI its in the Alphabet District (I think is what it's referred to). After flying to Portland from Florida, a turd greeted us in the toilet. Not a great stay but the cafe downstairs is great! After we left, I communicated our issues with Mari and she refunded our money-which is fair. It only took almost a month.
I hope that you will read all of my other reviews and realise that this review was merely a vehicle in which this woman threatened me to get a refund.
She was not a favorable guest.
M.A. was great with the four of us doing a short two night stay in Portland. Although she was busy working on the days we were there, she still found time to spend some time with us and converse about what she is passionate about in life. She is a very positive person and has a great attitude. Definitely a new friend in Portland for us!
The room we rented was the one with the circular white couches with the bed in the middle. There was lots of space for the four of us and also a sleeping space (not pictured) in the room, but on the floor in a cozy alcove. The room says that up to 6 guests are allowed but with the bed, alcove and couches, you could have more (but not as comfortable).
The house also was on top of a diner restaurant which is quite popular. I had read in a previous review complaining about a smell of pancakes from the restaurant below, but we did not smell this at all, just the mild smell of an older house (which we got used to quick). Instead, we found the close proximity of the restaurant an asset, as it was easy for us to just go downstairs to grab something to eat/drink. The house is also a short walk from some neat shops and restaurants.
We were allowed late hours entry with our own house key. We misplaced one of the keys (and later found it), but our host M.A. was gracious about it throughout.
Overall a great experience based on the location and corresponding price (we needed something which could fit four or more, close to the Rose Garden Arena and could not find as good a deal as this), and the personality of the host!
Staying at Mary Ann's house was a pleasure. The room was more than accommodating for all of us and was very warming with the decorative lighting.
Mary Ann also provided us with an insider tip on the best breakfast in the area (Besaw's) and we all started off our day with a fine meal and delicious coffee.
I cannot even fathom having a complaint here; having a great place to stay topped off a perfect Portland experience.
Johannes and I stayed at Marie-Ann's place, which was ideal for us as we were looking for a place close to down town.
