Response from Isabelle:
Hosting Dee and her family was a terrible experience. Not only did they cause damages to our cottage amounting to several hundreds of dollars, but as a result of the condition they left our home in, we were forced to cancel our next reservation, losing a total $344 in the process.
Dee was offered a SUBSTANTIAL discount for her reservation; instead of $115.00, Dee paid $89.00 a night for four people. She not only saved $208, but we waived the $40 cleaning fee. Because of this, we couldn’t offer her a refund for the night she didn’t show up. When Dee first asked whether a refund would be possible after she arrived at our cottage, she emphatically stated she
understood if it wasn’t. After leaving, once the situation had become rather tense, Dee demanded we reconsider or a negative review would be left.
Dee used the heaters in our cottage to dry clothes she had hand washed (she NEVER requested access to the laundry), and to dry damp shoes. This is hugely concerning for us, as what Dee was doing was tremendously dangerous, and it demonstrated a complete lack of consideration towards the fact that she was in someone’s home. Covering the heaters could have started a fire, which at worst, might have burnt our cottage down, but instead caused notable damages. One heater had large hole burnt through it’s casing, and there were black scorch marks on the wall behind it; the other had a burnt casing and melted rubber all over its surface. If Dee was cold at any point during her stay it was because she managed to compromise our heaters functionality.
On the fourth day of Dee’s stay, I received a message that suggested that the carpets in our cottage were stained; she wasn’t complaining however, she “just [didn’t] want to be charged for it”. I responded by informing Dee that I had taken photographs of the cottage prior to her arrival. After this, Dee made such exaggerated claims about the state of our home that I was very nervous over what I might discover upon their departure. My concerns were warranted.
Immediately in front of the entrance to our cottage, in the hallway, there were huge mud stains. Numerous sets of dark footprints traced a path towards and into each bedroom, where we discovered orange pasta sauce stains on the carpet and all over the bed linen in one room; in the other, a brown liquid had been spilt over the bed, and had soaked through to and ruined our memory foam mattress topper. While I was tremendously upset, I was even more shocked that Dee had the audacity to suggest that this was the condition our cottage was in when they arrived.
Dee and her family appear to have made the carpets in our cottage muddy, didn’t want to take responsibility for it, and when I questioned the truthfulness of their claims, they retaliated by causing further damages to our home.
