A long time traveler, I was so obsessed with not being stuck in an office that I eventually got a job in travel journalism. At first, I worked for travel trade publications. Then I got a job with a magazine called Travel & Leisure. Then one called Saveur (with a very loose affiliation with the French Saveurs) and finally with Gourmet, the premier food magazine in the U.S. until late 2009 when Condé Nast folded it. At that point, I was straddling the worlds of both travel and food (a nice place to be) and for the past two years was with a start-up website called (URL HIDDEN) which hooked up our subscribers with restaurant offers. I have only recently left my last job to start writing and traveling again—my real passion.
I am especially fond of Europe. I speak Spanish and enough French to sound sophisticated when asking directions. I can carry on a beautiful conversation in a pigeon language of Spanish and French, with bits of English and even some German and Italian phrases thrown in. Not everyone else can understand me, though. (But some multi-lingual friends do, and it is a joy to converse with them.)
Also, I love to cook, garden, and am wild about trains, planes, and even the Métro and the much-chastized Underground in London. Architecture is another passion.
I am a very independent traveler with few needs. I love meeting new people, though, but do not like to impose at any time. I've never thought of a life motto, but it just might be: If you are too comfortable, you are perhaps not living up to your potential.
