A perpetual student of life. Cola addict. Wishful traveler. If there is anything I'd rather do for the rest of my life, it is to travel and learn many languages. Seeing Brazil with my own eyes was exhilarating. It is truly a beautiful country with its many faces, the Cariocas, Bahianas, the tropical scenery, the warm weather, the vibrant culture. I will never forget the lilting voice of the cab driver on my way to the Ipanema fair as he crooned a bossa nova, or the sound of street reggae in old Pelourinho, or the infusing sound of samba in Lapa lounge in Rio de Janeiro. I have never felt so instantly moved by a country and connected with any other culture as much as I had connected with the Brazilian people, and yet I came to the country equipped only with my Brazilian Portuguese. This, I spoke no better than the skill of a cave man! Nevertheless, I spoke it bearing in mind what Boren said, "You don't really understand a culture unless you speak in the language of their country. By doing that, I felt in some sense a Brazilian myself, having befriended Brazilians during my brief stay who responded very eagerly to my sputterings of “Obrigada” or “Bom dia.” Even when I got the context mixed up, I was instantly rewarded for my efforts. I loved every minute of my stay and will surely be back.
