The first thing you will notice about this place is the beautiful winding drive up Topanga Canyon Rd. Topanga is a quiet mountain community tuck away in the canyons overlooking Malibu and Santa Monica. When we arrived we were greeted with a warm welcome from Mathew and his beautiful white husky named Blue. He gave us a tour of the property, said we could help ourselves to the vegetable and herb garden--where he was growing all kinds of delicious leafy greens--and we immediately made ourselves at home. The surrounding landscape is a wonderful mix of desert palettes and Spanish-influenced, adobe-style homes. The nights were quiet and cool, typical to desert climates. Our room was situated on the top floor of the house featuring a patio with a hammock, sauna, and a lovely claw-footed tub in the bathroom where you could sit and soak in a hot bath at the end of a long day. If you are looking for an eco-friendly getaway with easy access to hikes up the Canyon, and an almost cowboy-like isolation, this is a wonderful place to spend a few days. Mathew was such a generous host and made us feel right at home from the minute we drove up to the property.
Mathew is a very generous host . I felt very welcome. His house in the Topanga canyon is lovely. It feels like being in the wilderness. In the morning the sun rises at 7.30 above the mountain. It is absolutely quiet and you can only hear the birds. Beforhand I was wondering how it felt, to stay in a place where the owner is staying as well. Because Mathew is such a respectful and friendly person, it feld absolutely nice and warm. I can higly recommand the place.
Mathew's cottage was beautiful and peaceful. The furniture has been moved around since the photos were taken, but the room itself was comfortable and tucked within a window that greeted the morning. The water for the clawfoot tub was hot, and Mathew even provided bubble bath. We very much enjoyed our stay.
I feel so lucky to have found such a peaceful little hideaway! Matthew was a warm and thoughtful host. Within about an hour of meeting him I felt like an old friend. The room itself was exactly what I was hoping for... I was able to open up the windows each morning and enjoy the cool California mornings, take baths in the claw foot tub and read on the hammock during the warm afternoons. The location is within a couple hundred feet of the Red Rock nature trail so walks were a must every morning.
Mathew was very accommodating and during our time there. It was really quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed it!
Perfect retreat, only wish I could recuperate from City life a few more days. Spend as much time in the hammock and sauna (unlike myself as I was still in city-mode). And make time to go on night hikes. Gracious and caring host. No mobile phone network access, which is a blessing in disguise. Fast internet. Clean dessert air. Just book it!
Mathew was out of town for the duration of our stay, but Brittany was the best. Loved her! I lived in Topanga a couple years ago and it brought back so many memories of why I never wanted to leave. It's just so magical and a nice getaway from LA. Mathew's dogs were the sweetest and greeted us every time we came back to the property. We only stayed for a night since we were attending a wedding down the road, but I wish we had more time to stay longer. Mathew's home is so beautiful, relaxing, and welcoming. I will definitely stay here again!
I believe the job of an airbnb host is to make you feel incredibly welcome and kept the entire duration of your trip. Mr. Mathew Gerson and his trusted advisers Blue and Dylan did so with a great eye for detail. This coupled with Mr. Gerson's innate gift to host others, made for an unforgettable journey. With great esteem and pleasure, I highly recommend this secluded adobe style get away to others looking for serenity outside the hustle and flow of LA. With the nearness to Venice Beach's chic hippy culture, Santa Monica's youthful buzz, and Malibu's intense natural esthetics, the location is absolutely perfect.
Both Blue and Dylan provided daily tours of their favorite Topanga trail, while Mr. Gerson stayed intensely in tune with my need to reengage with the sea and sky. All were eager to provide anything I needed, from late night directions, to where to go for the most sought after cup of coffee, locals beach or massage; not to mention all the appropriate essentials like soap, towels, linens and more.
This was my first time to share common spaces with a host. In my mind, I thought this might be terribly awkward and uncomfortable. Instead, I found it to actually heighten my awareness of the local culture and ability to fully appreciate this home and its unique setting. By week's end, I had met many delightful neighbors, friends and family members. Mr. Gerson really made every effort to make me feel right at home.
Your experience may be heightened by knowing your cell phone will be useless; Alas, the high speed internet run seamlessly. Bring flip flops for walking around the perimeter of the property and athletic shoes for daily walks/runs starting right out side your bedroom door. Check out Topanga beach at sunset and Lee Carrilo beach by day. Bring your favorite vegetable and meat selection back from the market and toss it on the handmade brick bbq just outside the shared kitchen. Mr. Gerson has all of special ingredients you may need for the perfect marinade.
When describing the physical space, "Vintage charm and serenity" hits it right on the spot. However, upon entering I was immediately overwhelmed by the warmth and hospitality of Matthew and friends. I somehow felt I was right where I belonged and this feeling continued to build throughout my stay. This was by far my peak experience as an Airbnb guest. I found the nurturing energy of this oasis folded into the smooth rose colored canyon to be much more rejuvenating than the simple solitude I was seeking. Truthfully, I did not want to leave…but did so completely fulfilled and beyond grateful to have spent time here.
Although the host was not there, a friend of the host met us and was very friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed the stay and would stay there again if I was looking for a quiet getaway. I felt safe.
The main picture for this listing (as of 8/4/14) is not from the part of the home where we stayed, although most of the others are.
The property is fairly remote - it feels like there are no other properties nearby, it is surrounded by wilderness, and there is absolutely no (Verizon) cell reception. If that's what you're looking for, this would be a great fit for you. If you're looking for something more city-like, this would be a bad fit for you.
It was simply a pleasure to host Mathew. He was very nice and friendly, clean and considerate. He was a perfect guest. I would definitely host him again!
