We stayed at Mako's beautiful house for 3 nights and had a wonderful time.
The house itself was delightful and was fully equipped with everything that you could possibly need, including a great coffee maker. Also the most comfortable bed in Japan! The house was in a great location and our hostess marked out local sites and points of interest on a map that she supplied us with. I thoroughly recommend this wonderful experience!
Mako is a wonderful host. We arrived at Kyoto very late, she waited us and kept the house warm till very late, one of my friend was sick on 2nd day, she came and checked, and bought medicine for us. She left lots of useful info for our tour, She helped us to book the restaurant. We thanked her for everything in Kyoto. Mako's house is also fantastic, clean, spacious and lovely with nice details everywhere. I recommand everyone(with 3-4 people) who travels to Kyoto to stay here. Thanks Mako.
Dear Mako, we had a great time at your nice house¡¡¡.
Pictures do not express enough the nice atmosphere and feeling you get there . All is super-comfortable, clean and new. I was in the house with 2 kids and we were really like at home. Mako advices and help were great and we would strongly recommend to stay there when you go to Kyoto. Quarter was perfect & quiet ( 15min walk to Kyoto station). A quiet pleace. I would specially recommend the superb kitchen¡¡¡. I would repeat for sure in my next visit to Kyoto.
Our group of 5 stayed at Kirakuan for 7 nights in December and we LOVED it! Everything was amazing!
Our host Mako met us at the local subway station and walked us to the house so we had no trouble finding the place. Mako was very nice and friendly and gave us a tour of the house, explained all the appliances and provided us with a map of the area and even provided some traveling tips for our destinations in Kyoto. Mako provided us with some toast and jam for our breakfast as well as some cookies and chips. During our stay, Mako checked in with us via email and checked in to see if we needed anything.
As for the house, it was AMAZING. Kirakuan provides the cultural experience of an old house with all the luxury of the latest home technology. We really loved the heated floors and the self-filling bathtub. Yup, one push of a button and the bathtub begins filling by itself, then when it's done, it announces itself and notifies you. There are air conditioners/heaters on the first floor and one in each room upstairs, so we were really warm and cozy, even during a snow storm.
Kirakuan is beautiful. You can tell that the owners really put a lot of attention and detail in all aspects of the house to make sure that guests are comfortable. All the appliances and amenities that you need in the kitchen are there.
As for the location, Kirakuan is about a 8-10 minute walk to Kyoto Main Station so it was really convenient to travel by train and the local buses.
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Kirakuan and would definitely stay here again!
Our family of 4 adults thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Kirakuan, and recommend it highly. Saki is an attentive and caring host. She answers all communications promptly and very courteously. She made excellent recommendations for our visit- A quiet but spectacular illuminated temple, and a fantastic Sunday flea market, which were highlights of our stay in Kyoto.
The house itself is an absolute joy- functional with a feeling of spaciousness, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. It was a pleasure to stay here for 5 days.
We (2 couples and a 1 year old) stayed at Kirakuan for 4 nights. It is a beautifully decorated place, even better than the photos you see! The first floor had a well equipped kitchen, a washing machine and a bathroom with a bathtub great for soaking with the bath salts provided. The second floor had two bedrooms with an adjoining high tech toilet (the toilet welcomes you by automatically lighting up and opening its cover). One bedroom was Japanese futon style while the other was two twin beds. They were super comfortable and would accomodate 4 adults plus 1 child comfortably. Amenities were aplenty in the apartment.
The place was quiet, peaceful and located close to a supermarket. It was located pretty close to attractions in kyoto so we took a cab to most of them (worth it for 4 pple since a bus ride is around 230¥/pax) Check in process was smooth and Saki came by to give us a short tour even though we made her wait for 1.5 hours (sorry!). She is very friendly and helpful and even left us a treat on our final night. She was easily contactable through whatsapp and also helped us arranged for cabs to the station at 6am!
We really loved the place and would recommend any group of 4 to stay here and gladly come back if we visit kyoto again.
Saki was an excellent host! She greet us as the house and was extremely helpful in providing us suggestions on transit options and where/when to go to avoid crowds at the popular sites. We had a rainy day right in the middle of our stay so Saki texted me and suggested some nice indoor places to visit where we could stay dry.
The house itself is beautifully decorated. Such a great experience staying in a traditional machiya while still having all the modern conveniences of A/C, heating, laundry, etc.
Saki also recommended some wonderful restaurants in the neighborhood and helped us make reservations as well. Excellent home, excellent host!
I was fortunate enough to stay at Gagakuan for three and a half weeks in October - November 2014. It is an absolutely fantastic place. Not only is the Machiya itself absolutely beautiful, but you simply could not wish for better hosts than Saki san and Mako san.
Firstly, the Machiya. It has all the home comforts you'd need, has been beautifully preserved and is in a great location, near both the station and within walking distance of the sights of Kyoto (if you like to walk), or right beside Gojo underground station (if you don't!) It is a lovely, welcoming place to come home to in the evenings and is somewhere you will feel genuinely at home in. It also has wonderful character and feels like you're staying in a truly authentic kyoto residence, rather than some soulless hotel room. The photos of the place are accurate - it really is as good as it looks!
As for Mako san and Saki san, they were brilliant - hugely helpful with suggestions and recommendations and really helped me make the most of my time in Kyoto.
If you are considering staying here when visiting Kyoto, then my recommendation would be to forget wherever else you're looking at and just book it. The great reviews that Gagakuan has are all well deserved and you won't regret it!
Mako's house is excellent. We stayed 5days, and very happy. This accomodation is the nicest, clean, pretty and comfortable. The location is fine too. Mako explained about Kyoto and provided all the maps. We appreciated with her kindness. We will recommend this house to all my friends.
