We have only rated this as a 2 because it was not suitable for our requirements. For others it may be far more suitable. The apartment is suited for people who are: a) chinese speaking, b) familiar with Beijing and the transport system, c) don't need any concierge type assistance and d) don't need to be close to tourist attractions on foot or by bicycle.
We took the apartment based on a favourable Airbnb review by a young family. We suspect they were chinese speaking or had some other familiarity with Beijing. I think it is important to note such things when giving a review.
The apartment is in a typical older private apartment building. It is not at all attractive, and to a western tourist, it is quite offputting. The entrance, lift and stairway areas are concrete and there are boxes and stuff everywhere. It is not litter, and not dirty as such. Another reviewer mentioned that public spaces are not well maintained in these type of private apartments - the reviewer was very accurate on that point. The apartment itself was spacious, clean and had all amenities as per the listing. Our contact person, Xia Li, met us at the airport (at no charge) and drove us to the apartment. Her english was not great, but she tried very hard and showed us all through the apartment. Her brother was available on the phone and he spoke more english. When we cancelled the balance of our stay, Xia offered to drive us back to the airport. She tried very hard to be welcoming, friendly and helpful.
As first time westerners in Beijing we should not have done the Airbnb concept at all. We ended up moving to a small hutong hotel near to the Wangfujing shopping mall. It had english speaking reception and we could walk to Forbidden City and ride to other locations.
We hope this review ensures appropriate people stay at Xia's apartment so that she gets good reviews from those for whom it suits.
Great authentic place in convenient location with easy access to metro. Xia also thankfully picked us up from the airport. Much recommended.
Awesome location and awesome host!
Li was very helpful and friendly Her place is clean and central which is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for such an enjoyable experience Li!
Very convenient apartment near the metro (website hidden) Xia helped us during our stay and it is invaluable in a city like Beijing. She picked us up at the airport, took us to see the Great Wall and helped us in all our travels.
The room is spacious, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom a little small but (website hidden) Xia, you are an angel.
My wife, 5-month-old child, and I (email hidden)'s apartment in Beijing in July 2012 and had a fantastic time. The place is large and clean and being on the 13th floor with southwest-facing windows it gets great light all day. The apartment is conveniently located right next to the third ring road, which makes grabbing a cab a breeze. The subway and airport express line are within fairly easy walking distance, as is Carrefour (the French box-store chain) and Starbucks and a host of convenience shops and food shops. There are several very good restaurants on Jing'an Street (notably, Jing Wei Zhai), as well as a post office and numerous banks. So to say the place is convenient is an understatement.
The apartment was impeccably clean upon arrival and the Internet, AC units, washing machine, fridge, and TV all worked (website hidden) was also a great host. Traveling with a small baby is stressful enough and (website hidden) went out of her way to find a crib for us, which she brought by first thing the second morning. It was hugely appreciated since we had just recently begun to let the baby sleep for the first part of the night in a crib at home.
Staying at this apartment had the additional plus of being a real Beijinger's apartment. Having stayed far too many times in Beijing's backpacker hostels and more upscale hotels, I can't emphasize the positive difference of this place enough. First of all, it feels like a real home. Depending on what one is accustomed to at home, the amenities of the apartment will feel very familiar to most guests. It is important to know beforehand that the common spaces of apartment buildings in China, in our experience, are usually not representative of the fastidiousness with which residents maintain the interiors of apartments. This was definitely the (email hidden)'s place. Then there's the added benefit of actually living in a fairly typical Beijing apartment block and having the chance to see people coming and going up close. The neighbors were curious about our presence at first but the baby was a good ice breaker and everyone was unfailingly nice and courteous.
We will return to Beijing before too long and will definitely try to stay here.
