I stayed at Jean's when I first moved to Plymouth and was looking for a house. Jean was an excellent hostess - very helpful, very friendly, and instantly made me feel at home :)
Very pleased with everything, Jean is a great host... Will be staying again in the future :) xx
The host was really friendly and helpful, especially letting me leave my bike in the hallway. I felt that the room could have been cleaner. I am by no means a "clean freak" but there were a lot of hairs on the stairs which made me think they hadn't been vacuumed for a while and some of the furniture felt a little musty. Perhaps some newer plain sheets (nothing fancy) and possibly curtains would give the room a fresher feel.
Location was as described and easy to get into town
This was perfect for us as it was very relaxed and could accommodate 5 adults. Very quiet location so slept well!
Value for money
This was my first using airbnb and my experience was quite good. Place was easy to find from the city centre which is just 20 mins away, and Jean was very friendly. Beds were pretty comfortable and you get access to a nice living area. One downside was that breakfast was not provided even though that's listed as one of the amenities. Sad for us as we were on quite a budget backpacking around Europe. Still a nice place to stay overall.
I had been walking through Cornwall for a couple of weeks, and needed a place to stay in Plymouth prior to taking a train to Heathrow. Jean's place was one of two I looked at. After reading all of the prior reviews, I felt it was a good bet, and booked it. Everything was exactly as I had expected from reading the reviews, but even better! Jean is dynamite - very relaxed, and friendly, and helpful. I got there a bit early, but that was no problem. Her selection of bedrooms was delightful. The common area lounge and kitchen and bathroom were fine - the lounge in particular was quite comfortable. The kitchen could have been a little cleaner, but I could deal with that. The shower is extremely narrow and awkward to bathe in, but there was plenty of hot water.
The neighborhood this lovely Georgian home is in is wonderful! I saw so much more of interesting Plymouth than I would have if I stayed right in the center of the city. There is a large neighborhood park with public swimming pool and cafe just a few blocks away, Mt. Wise. There is a social club. There is a hip, artistic, cafe. Just two or three blocks away is an unusual and well-stocked public library. There are several other parks nearby. There are several buses that will take you into city center - Barbican, Hoe, and Royal William Yard, but I generally walked everywhere. Also, there (email hidden)-op right down the street, with everything one could want.
This accommodation was excellent value. If there was one caveat, I would say the house could have been cleaner, but that's not something that bothers me. If you're very fastidious, however, this would probably not be the place for you.
Jean is lovely lady. Her home is full of her potential and history of her family where they has been brought up.
I am happy to go back anytime!
Response from Jean:
hiya, Although there is no chance anyone can see in if you feel vulnerable there is usually a towel in the room and that provides for an absolute darker curtain...
I am very satisfied after my stay at 16 Duke Street. The contact with Mrs Hendy was great, I had no problems or whatsoever.
The place itself is nice, spacious and clean. For most of the time I was the only tenant. My room was very cosy and warm.
The only downsides was that the big living room downstairs takes some time to heat up (my visit took place in December) and a poor WIFI on a top floor (this should be easily improved).
Overall It was very nice.
I can totally recommend this place.
Jean is a fabulous and humorous hostess. Ever so helpful and accommodating, she will make sure you are welcomed and made to feel right at home. Full of local knowledge, she can guide you around Devon with incredible insights...
The house is an old one and full of charm and quirks. The rooms are simple, yet very comfy and the kitchen is equipped well enough to prepare simple foods while staying here. The location is brilliant. It's a 10-15 minute bus to the city center, there are two big food stores down the road, but on the block where the house is located, everything one would need is just a few steps away. Pubs, a couple of cafés, a food coop, a pharmacy and there's even a surgery 4 blocks away if you need a doctor. If you have a car, parking in front of or near the house is easy and free.
If you aren't looking for something fancy, then this is a place to consider.
There was no heating on when I arrived ( just above freezing outside and not much better inside ). A little bit of effort would not go a miss !.
Jean and Ian are very chatty friendly people.Easy to get on with and are excellent guests.
