La Palapa is not a typical AirBnb direct with host operation – it’s a small resort co-opting the AirBnB reservation format. It's available from any number of other hotel booking web sites. Not a great sin but it’s a commercial operation and affects the assessment. It has about 6 independent bungalows and a similar number of bedroom garden view units arranged around a central pool and thatched roof administrative/ dining area. The grounds and facilities are gorgeous. It’s a bit startling to step into this lush, beautifully maintained oasis. Little pathways wind their way from the parking lot through the gardens to the pool and administrative area and to the different bungalows. The bungalow are barely visible amongst the trees and gardens and are well constructed and maintained. They are spacious, brightly coloured with high sloped ceilings, heavily accented with wood doors and shutters and have a porch/patio. Wireless is generally available but not particularly robust. Certainly good enough for email and general browsing. Not at night. Breakfasts are not elaborate but ample – scrambled eggs, rice, beans and a selection of cut fruit, breads, jams and chutneys. After 3 days some variety would be appreciated. Coffee keeps running out. This would be a happy story if ended here. Here are 4 things you should know: Generally the resort is well situated but you’ll need a car to reach the resort and the local attractions nearby. The road from the main highway to the resort is pretty rough and rocky. You won’t need a SUV to travel along but you’ll be glad to have that tire and windshield rider you were armed twisted into taking by the car rental outlets. While the bungalows are self contained the kitchen facilities are functionally useless. There is no microwave, toaster, coffeemaker, not even a kettle to boil water to make tea. There are no cutting boards, no tea-towels, no salt and pepper, the cutlery and plates are pretty rudimentary, no bowls for mixing and most damning of all there are no wine glasses or a cork screw. I can sympathize with the owner that you do not want these bungalows turned into grease splattered, burn stained hunting lodge facilities but, come on, a coffee maker, cutting board and kettle and some wine glasses seems a pretty basic requirement in a self contained unit. Meals offered by the resort are average to disappointing. Don’t ask for a menu – there isn’t one. Everything is a la carte and the small deserts and side salads offered come at a pretty steep price for the convenience which you won’t be aware of until settling up time when you leave. There are better eating alternatives in Quepos or Dominical or grab some take away and enjoy in your bungalow. Unfortunately, Ana Christina is not available. Manuel the owner/manager is very familiar with the area and he’ll provide you with a schematic map of local attractions. His explanations at times seem at odds with the nicely prepared activity...
This is an excellent place for bird watchers with toucans & parrots nesting in the extensive gardens. Lots of other good birding close by. Ask Manuel for directions to playel del Rey, the lane is good for all kingfishers of the area, herons inc boat billed, we had indigo bunting and indigo grosbeak, scissor tailed flycatcher, galinules just to mention a few, the road is a bit rough but easily passable with SUV type vehicle.
Very relaxing around the pool and in the gardens
This place is amazing!!! Very clean, organized and relaxing. The pictures do not do this place justice; it must be experienced in person to get the full feel and beauty of the place. The staff is courteous and helpful and the bar, restaurant and pool area are great for relaxing, having a cafe/drink or eating a meal. I highly recommend it!!!!!!
This is a beautiful, peaceful place that is harmony with the nature around it. There is a lovely waterfall/stream down the road that you can walk to.
The rooms are basic but spacious, cool, and comfortable. Extremely clean with gorgeous, natural landscaping.
The wildlife is outstanding.
The hosts are kind and knowledgable.
Absolutely recommend staying here.
La Palapa is a wonderful tropic garden with flowers and birds including the Tucan. Bungalows are clean and have a nice deck with table and chairs, where you can enjoy the tropical night. Pool is beatiful and mostly in shade. Breakfast is great and the host couple is most helpful and kind.
I had a wonderful stay here. The grounds are beautiful. Our bungalow was lovely, large and clean! Christina (our host) was so accommodating and friendly! Upon arrival she gave us a map and pointed out some great local spots to go to! We enjoyed them so much! Great beaches, waterfalls, restaurants, and cute little towns all within a few minutes of driving. She graciously sprayed me down with antiseptic after I fell on some rocks. I felt very well taken care of here. Breakfast each morning was delicious! It is so relaxing to sleep to the sound of raindrops on the tin roof. I loved it here. There are so many plants and wildlife to see on the grounds. You will not be disappointed! I only wish we could have stayed longer. Thanks for having us!
The room is basic but very clean and good size. The bathroom was great. The grounds at this resort are impeccably maintained and the overall stay was pleasant.
Start with a sloth sighting right on arrival (like he was waiting!), a lovely pathway to a charming palapa with tables for dinner, and a beautiful inviting pool! This is how to start our adventure on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
Christina and Manuel were lovely hosts. After showing us our private casita through a well manicured trail, we were surprised that we had a private veranda overlooking the well manicured grounds.
Its unbelievable the amount of love, sweat and care that Manuel and his crew must have put into this jungle setting in the last year. It is really beautiful.
The palapa was clean, nicely furnished and well appointed. A short stroll lead us to dinner under the palapa for a lovely chicken casado typical costa rican dish.
At night, I went out and found frogs, a sloth, leaf cutter ants and heard birds. The birds also act as an alarm clock in the morning in a relaxing way.
Breakfast was buffet style and included. Other guests were there as well and it was great to discuss what they did the day before and exchange tips. Christina and Manuel helped us arrange a couple of trips that we would have otherwise missed. Nayauca Falls and a Mangrove tour.
If you need to catch up on email, the wireless in the main palapa area worked well for my iphone and ipad. It would drop if many people were using it, however this has been my experience in many other locales.
Beverages are available for adults, however. If you looking for loud music and people partying, this wouldn't be your place. If you want relaxation and a quiet secure, safe and fun jungle adventure, this is it!!
We will definately return to this piece of paradise in Costa Rica! Thank you Christina and Manuel for a lovely, memorable, relaxing stay at La Palapa Eco Resort!
