We found this hostel by accident -- we needed to be close to the bus station to go on the next leg of our trip. I wish we had time to stay longer so we could have explored more of this historic neighborhood and enjoyed more of the live samba and forró music nearby. Next time we want to go see the stilt-walkers at their theatre a block away, we saw a few coming back from an event and it was quite a sight.
If you are a curious and adventurous traveler who avoids the typical tourist route, it will be a breath of fresh air to stay at Plain & Simple and enjoy real cotton sheets, high ceilings, wood floors, and feel as if you have stepped back into the old Rio. These days most of Rio is one chaotic construction site --but fascinating. And especially the port area will soon be changed forever, who knows how long you have to see it like this?
I really enjoyed my stay at Plain and Simple. The room was clean and freshly painted and the shower was first class. The surrounding neighborhood was vibrant with many local samba events giving you a feel for the real Brazil.
It is exactly as advertised; plain, simple, clean, safe and affordable.
WOW what a great time thank you Jane & Tomi for the accomodations.
It was exactly what I needed - reasonably priced and clean - I loved the location too - off the path of touristic Rio - The location made me feel like I was part of the fabric of the city . I'll be back next year and will def stay with you again.
Just right! I needed a comfortable place to spend the night in Gamboa and it was perfect. Good location on a rough but safe neighborhood street. Very clean. Comfortable bed. Nice hot shower. Good wifi. GREAT VALUE. Thanks! I'll be back.
I had been several times in Rio before, but this hostel allowed me to discover a very different city - a fascinating city as well. In Gamboa you are in the middle of a very alive zone, that is linked to the past, the slavery port of the XIX century, and to the future, which is an area in a big urban transformation. The atmosphere of the neighbourhood is incredible, and we could walk all over the streets beside the center, the heart of the old city. The hostel has also a very good relation quality/price. And Tomi and his family give to the place a fantastic energy.
Great place and location! I enjoyed staying in Gamboa. As Rio's port zone, the neighborhood has lots to offer in terms of history and nightlife all the like. Not the usual South Zone Rio/Copacabana joint, yet highly recommended for anyone traveling on budget and willing to explore a different side of Rio de Janeiro.
I'm another US expat who owns a home in BA and became good friends with Tomi & Jane. They're great folks who are very reliable, and their home would be a really nice place to rent. The location is excellent, close to transportation and right between Palermo Soho & Hollywood. Lots of restaurants close by, good shopping and cultural areas. It's old-BA style with high ceilings and nice woodwork. It's very private and has a great rooftop with parilla to cook and hang out. An excellent choice for a few weeks or months.
Everything A+. We stayed in Tomi's house for 8 weeks. Best experience, best area, best house at very reasonable rates. Description fitted 100%. Actually, reality was much better than the nice pics. We had a wonderful time at Charcas. Thanks Tomi. We look forward to coming back.
I have known Tomi for more than twenty years, and he is a wonderful, responsible and caring father, filmmaker and human being. He has lived and travelled in many countries, including Latin America, Europe and the United States and speaks several languages. I have visited his loft in New York, and it is a great space full of style and character. I cannot recommend Tomi highly enough as either a tenant or renter. He is completely trustworthy and take excellent care of your place.
whether renting to or leasing from tomi you can't go wrong, he's the best!
We rented Tomi's house during three weeks in January 2012.
The perfect place to stay with a family : a lot of space, nice design, Air Con, located in the perfect place : Palermo. Tomi and his wife were very helpful and gave us a lot of tips to discover the city. Definitively the place to be in BA !
Paul and his family from Paris
I stayed at Tomi's place in Buenos Aires several times. It is in the absolutely coolest neighborhood: ¨Palermo Hollywood¨. Plenty of cozy bars, delicious restaurants and bookstore-cafes, close to all public transport and super-easy to get a cab day or night. A great base from which to explore the city. Tomi was never there when I stayed - i know him from New York and we do an occasional apartment exchange - but the apartment had lovely amenities, comfortable furniture, interesting artwork, books, an eclectic dvd collection, a full kitchen, amazing huge roof terrace with barbecue, hammock and palm trees... I immediately felt at home there. No hassles, just great. Highly recommended!
