Wonderful place in wonderful surroundings. Very nice and helpful neighbour on ground floor. The days at Craigville Beach and the sunsets at Barstable Harbor are incredible.
I have never had to leave a bad review on Airbnb but, sadly, I have to echo the others about the overwhelming mold issue. I took a picture of the ceiling tiles that were duct taped to keep them from falling on our heads but am unable to post that here. It rained our last day and the mold/mildew problem became so exacerbated that I almost had to go to the ER as my airway was closing up from the irritation. My eyes were burning from it too. I ended up sitting on the deck in the rain for a bit to breathe fresh air. The furniture pictured on this website is not the furniture in the space. Instead of the nice sofa & chair, there is a moldy flowered sofa, a rickety coffee table & old rattan chair. Too bad because it really is a cute space in a very nice location. I'm pretty easy going and am usually not bothered by dirt or messes, however, the ceiling and mold problems are so bad that I doubt the place would pass a housing inspection. There are no towel racks or hooks in the bathroom which is a pretty basic item that all bathrooms should have. On the up side, the beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked with utensils. I've used Airbnb many times and this is the first time I've ever had such an awful experience. I cannot recommend this place until the owner does some serious repair work!
Kate is a very responsive host. There were some problems but first for the good. Centrally located to be sure. Loved being close to the beach and town. Beds are comfy. Kitchen is bright and workable but could use a few more pots (especially if you cook all meals, as I did). The crock pot came in very handy to cook the 'sauce' while at the Hyannis Hawks baseball games.
Unfortunately the fridge is very loud, missing shelves with a door that did not properly seal (hence the constant running). The fridge I used was not the one shown in the photos.
Also the living room furniture I used was not that in the current photo. Rain damage left tiles hanging precariously in the living area and the smell that others complained about was coming from the couch and air conditioner. Kate agreed to let us remove the air conditioner from the window to allow fresh air and that improved the situation. However, heavy rains while we were there caused leaking in the living area and pots had to be used to collect the drips. To Kate's benefit she offered me three extra days for the inconvenience, which I accepted. Kate promised to have the roof repaired and I would stay here again and recommend the apartment, with a guarantee that all roof and ceiling repairs had been made and a new couch installed. My family had a wonderful stay on the Cape and the apartment would have been perfect if not for the rain leaks and damage and smells. A new couch and new roof will perfect this gem.
The location of the place is great. The overall size of the apartment was sufficient for the 4 adults staying at the bnb. We had parking in the front. We never saw kate but she was able to answer her text pretty quickly. There is a distinct mouldy odour throughout the apartment. The living space is unusable as the odour is the worst in that room. I wouldn't recommend anyone staying here unless the water damage is resolved. The apartment has a lot of potential and very cute and cozy, however I couldn't get over the odour caused from the ceiling/roof water damage.
Well the place was good and bad.
The good: central location to most of cape cod. Easy drive to most places. It's on a medium busy street which has fairly constant traffic during the day but the house is set back a good distance from the street so it's more of a constant roar. Quiet at night though. Lovely bird song in the morning. The beds were very comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped with pots pans etc., would have been nice to have some basic cooking supplies like cooking oil, some simple spices but that is quibbling. There were a few tea bags and a little bit of coffee.
The bad: The smell. Wow. Other people mentioned it in their reviews but I'm not sure they were blunt enough. This is not just a damp musty smell, it is a damp musty smell combined with dead animal and quite possibly mold. I had a sore throat most of the time which went away as soon as we left. If anybody has a mold sensitivity or is just sensitive to smells I would avoid staying here. The apartment has obviously suffered a lot of water damage over the years which might be the source. The tiled ceiling in the TV room is actually caving in (the smell was worst in this room) and there was evidence of water damage on the ceiling in all rooms as well as the kitchen floor, which is peeling up. There were no curtains or blinds in the bedrooms, luckily we'd brought eye covers but you'll be getting up early if you don't. Also really felt like it needs a really good top to bottom clean. The couch was grungy and also had a bad smell. The fridge is on its last legs, lots of condensation inside and is really, really noisy--the kind of noise that will wake you up at night.
We never met the owner but she did reply to emails quickly.
This apartment could really use some TLC. The smell problem may be a difficult fix but many of the other things would be simple and cheap to solve. A new inexpensive fridge would help. Some curtains, better cleanup, air freshener, replace the damaged ceiling tiles. I'm afraid I can't honestly recommend this apartment.
This was a really cute little back house. It was very private, well furnished and equipped with everything we needed. They were very responsive to all of our questions! Great place!
Overall a pleasant stay. We never saw Kate, the host. She left the keys for our late arrival and we seemed to miss her on our comings and goings. You can definitely have a private stay here!. The apartment is a nice size, more than enough room for 2. As has been noted, there is a definite musty smell as you can find at the Cape. But a good deal for the price. Great location, would recommend for the un-finicky.
Sad to not have met you in person. I live in Los Angeles. :) Hopefully I will make up to the cape this summer for a couple of weeks.
I am glad that you had a great time on the Cape. We would love to have you back anytime.
Came to Cape Cod for a personal getaway, it was perfect!
I have stayed at Kate's place before and it was GREAT. It is VERY close to everything including the bars and restaurants in NoHo, all the fun of Studio City and the Universal CIty Walk, the Studios in Burbank and about 5 mins from the heart of Hollywood. It is true california cool with her modern-retro decor and chic furnishings. She is also really really fun to talk to and a great hostess. If it is your first time in L.A. or you just want a cool place to stay that is ultra safe and easy to get to, this is a terrific choice.
