Response from Lucy:
Roaches in Rio are common, can fly, and are not a sign of dirtiness or an infestation. The apartment overlooks a patch of tropical jungle, which attracts visitors ranging from monkeys and giant butterflies to bugs. These guests stayed at the height of Brazilian summer, when the trees teem with wildlife. We leave plenty of sprays to keep bugs at bay but some will still make their way inside from time to time. Most travellers to tropical countries are already aware that bugs come with the territory, and our house manual makes it clear that it is necessary to use the sprays and plug ins provided. My advice for travelers with an abject fear of creepy crawlies is to look for somewhere that doesn't have a balcony opening onto tropical jungle!
