I'm from New York originally, but love the desert.

Kevin was a great host. We stayed at his house for slightly over a week and it's been an excellent stay for us. His house had all the facilities one could need. The pool helped for some refreshing moments during the afternoons and the overall retro look of the house has been very charming! Location wise it's been very close to Hollywood and downtown and Santa Monica had been about 20-30 minutes of a car ride away. Can definitely recommend to stay at Kevin's!
My boyfriend and I went to Joshua Tree for the weekend and the place was perfect for us. The cabin is better than expected-- Loved the design and feel. Kevin was a perfect host and easy to get ahold of. In fact I proposed to my boyfriend that weekend so, we will always remember this place.
Kevin has a wonderful spot in the desert! The views of the hills are breathtaking and it is very private, tucked away from town. We enjoyed our time there very much especially the beautiful trees and bushes growing around the house which attract amazing birds and small critters to watch and enjoy. The evening sunsets and night skies were particularly amazing from his place especially because it was so quiet at night and dark. He has a good working kitchen and great bbq. A very lovely space to read, play cards and be still.
One thing to note though that there is a working date-palm farm behind him and we hit a weekend where they were using heavy machinery throughout the day. Thankfully their machine broke on the second day, so we were able to enjoy the desert quiet.
Response from Kevin:
Thanks for letting me know. You could always let me know during your stay too! I'm friends with the owner and will ask him in the future to not do work like that on the weekends.
Kevin was really accommodating and we had a great stay at his cabin. Great location on the edge of Joshua Tree.
Kevin was great to deal with, once again. Easy & fast communication. The Secluded JT Desert Retreat is super rad... exactly as pictured... totally clean and ready for our arrival. We had a bbq, used the little fire pit, drank wine, watched the stars, and turned his living room into a makeshift recording studio for a couple days. paradise. Thanks for having us back Kevin :)
I rented Kevin'a cabin for a weeklong writing retreat, and it was a great location to be secluded and tranquil, productive, and focused. If you like peace and quiet it would also be an excellent spot to base a leisure trip.
The cabin is small but well-appointed, and pleasingly connected to the desert landscape. It feels rustic and remote, but it has good WiFi and a well-appointed kitchen, and it's designed with taste and care. The furniture and details are charming and unique. It's the perfect balance between comfort and simplicity.
The landscaping is beautiful, and one of the things I enjoyed most about the property is the huge amount of wildlife that is on constant display: I spent quality time with many bird species, desert squirrels, lizards, and hummingbirds that were a near-constant companion.
Kevin was attentive and communicative, while giving you space as well. The power was out for an extended period my last day, but Kevin warned me in advance and was apologetic and accommodating about work being done by the power company that was out of his control.
If you're exploring the surrounding area, it's well situated to allow you to see areas of interest to the East and West, but be sure to allow plenty of time and gas money to get around if you're not used to desert distances.
One not-to-be-missed spot is the Palms Restaurant and Bar of Wonder Valley, about 30 minutes to the East. It is an oasis of friendly hospitality and bizarre (email hidden) with a rebel spirit and a hallucinatory vibe. Truly a unique joint, especially if you'(email hidden) aficionado as I am. Fair warning: Their hours are erratic so call ahead to see what the deal is.
Kevin was a wonderful host - there when called upon but otherwise you were alone to chill - and his place is a gem. We settled into the cabin easily, and it had everything we needed. The location is a great base from which to explore Joshua Tree Park, but plan on spending time at the cabin, just relaxing outside, watching desert sunrises and sunsets.
It was a great experience.A few days in the desert is great for the spirit, and Kevin's place is the ideal location.
Kevin was a super responsive and very welcoming host--there was even a bag of local coffee beans and milk in the fridge to greet us upon our arrival. His place is definitely secluded, so don't be afraid of a few dirt roads (nothing our Scion couldn't handle). A great place to get away from it all and enjoy some desert beauty!
We had a great time at Kevins' place in Joshua Tree. Location was perfect. On a quiet little road off 29 Palms fwy. We arrived late on a Friday night (like midnight) and simply had to pull the keys out of a lockbox to enter. You can walk to the little downtown strip in 5-10min where you can find cafes, Saturday Farmers Market, groceries, restaurants etc. The place is just as described and is nice, clean and has pretty fast internet too. The bed is awesome...I think it was a Temperpedic. It has everything you need for a BBQ too which we did not take advantage of but definitely will next time. Nice porch to drink your morning coffee. Quick 5-7min drive into the JT park too. Where we spent our Saturday hiking around. We brought our little pug too and he loved it. I'm glad Kevin warned us about keeping him on a leash because of coyotes because sure enough on Saturday morning a coyote was walking right down the middle of the street looking for breakfast. Welcome to Joshua Tree. Ha. In short...definitely recommended. Never actually met Kevin but everything was great and he even left pamphlets of Joshua Tree on the coffee table for us upon arrival. For a quick getaway...it was no fuss situation.
Kevin's place is wonderful. His directions got us there without any hassle. The house sits on a sort of hill which gives amazing views across the desert towards Joshua Tree National Park.
It feels remote but not so much that it's like a horror movie, which is ideal really. Unless you want to feel like you're in a horror movie, in which case, maybe find something more remote.
Everything you could possibly need is all there - towels, toiletries, kitchen wares, condiments.... Even the barbecue was all set up with coals and tinder ready to go.
The interior is stylishly appointed. I loved the vintage vibe and the colourful walls. There are guide books on the local flora and fauna, binoculars to spy things with and a telescope for stargazing.
I can't recommend this place enough.
Kevin has hosted me at his desert retreat for many years. The home reflects his personality - smart, casual and fun. The surrounding area is majestic and tranquil with so many interesting things to do nearby.
It's close to Los Angeles, yet a world away, and I can't wait for my next visit
Kevin and I met when we both lived in New York City in the early 1990s and we've been friends ever since. I've stayed with Kevin at his high desert retreat a number of times and he's always been the consummate host taking very good care of his guests. Our weekends in the desert usually involve a lot of cooking -- and Kevin is a great cook! I definitely recommend Kevin to other Airbnb members.
