I am working with international students at an university in Kyoto. I love traveling myself.
Maki's house is amazing with a beautiful garden and view over the city. She was really sweet and helpful and we felt totally relaxed in her place. We had dinner in downtown together on the first night and enjoyed many interesting conversations during our stay. Definitely recommended!
Maki has a beautiful place, with a great view! She was such a warm host, even took me to a great restaurant downtown one night. Using her bike to ride around Kyoto every day is something I'll never forget. Thanks Maki :)
Staying with Maki was the best! She is friendly and personable, and kind and generous with her time and knowledge of Japan and the Kyoto area; if you're visiting Kyoto, you should definitely "Visit Maki" :)
I'd stay again in a heartbeat and am so delighted to have made a new friend from afar!
What can we add to all these rightly very positive reviews of Maki and her apartment? We also very much enjoyed our stay at the 'best room with a view' and highly appreciated her warm hospitality and her clear and reliable communication. Oh, perhaps it is good to know that she also has two bikes that she let us use. Kyoto is a very flat city and so it is very easy to reach everything by bike. We cycled around for two days, which we (being Dutch) think is the best way to see the city. This is a great place to stay!
It is hard to convey with words alone how welcome we felt at Maki's place. We arrived at the perfect time of the year, and could enjoy the many sakura sightseeing spots of the town, especially the Philosopher's Path which is just down the road.
We went eating on several occasions with Maki and we had a lovely time, as culinary discoveries and good talks followed.
She provided us with detailled information about the places we wanted to visit or where to find the things we wanted to bring back from Kyoto, and all in all was a big help and part of the reason we liked it in Kyoto that much.
Her house was as nice as the pictures describe, and the renovated kitchen/living room area is beautiful too. And you can't beat that view !
I must say I consider Maki more as a friend than as our hostess for just one week, and I hope we will see each other again some day !
I really recommand staying at her place to anyone travelling with the purpose of meeting great people !
Maki and her 2 cats (Buchi & Sundan) will definately live in my memory for a long period of time. Staying with Maki was one of the highlights of our trip in Kyoto. She was so welcoming & chatty. Her recommendations and suggestions really helped but unfortunately we have limited time to explore. This Japanese style house have spectacular view from the room, bathtub and even toilet! The location is amazingly peaceful and definately an unique experience. Highly recommended. Thank you so much for the memory, Maki!
Maki is an excellent host and has a very nice apartment in a terrific location. We were 3 people staing 3 nights and regretted that we didnt stay longer. The 2 rooms in which we were sleeping were beatuful and cozy with an oustanding view over kyoto. The 2 cats sundance and butchie were keeping us company and we instantly, felt very much at home. Maki is kind and warm and is great at taking good care of her guests. She provided us with directions to our intended destinations, came with interesting suggestions for daytrips. It was sad when we had to leave her after our three nights. highly recommended! We will definietly go back!
Staying with Maki was great, she was very helpful in advising where to go and how to get there, she made dinner one night for her and her friend and invited me to stay, also on my first night took me down into Kyoto and we had some dinner. The house was great, very clean and had great views over Kyoto. The bus stop for the city centre is a 5 minute walk away and it takes about 20mins. I would definitely recommend staying here. Thanks!
We had a great time with Maki at a wonderful cozy place. We both felt like home. Maki is very kind and friendly and on a cold and rainy day she cooked Ramen for lunch and invited us too...yummy! As a highlight of our stay in Kyoto she took us to the Kurama Fire Festival, which was gorgeous. It was great to be there with Maki because that´s her favored festival and so she knows a lot interesting things to tell about. We appreciate that very much.
What a beautiful view from a very nice house!! And Maki as a very friendly and uncomplicated host! Together with our 8years old son we spend a so good time at kyoto. When the weather was good, we went by bicycle from Maki throw the city, when the weather was rainy, we enjoyed together with maki and the two cats the time "at home". She gave us so good advices for sightseeing, eating, culture, ... Thank you so much, Maki!
Staying at Maki’s is a wonderful way to explore or rediscover this wonderful old city. Just a five-minute bike ride away from the philosopher’s path, a wonderful walk stretching along the eastern side of old Kyoto lined with temples and hiking access to Daiimonji it is a jewel not to be missed.
Maki, a seasoned traveller herself is the ideal host to discover not only the city but also get a glimpse of Japanese culture and hospitality. A stay, especially during the cherry season in April or autumn will make for an unforgettable experience.
Maki is a sweetheart! I stayed with her in 2008 and had the best summer of my life. Location is more than perfect. I'm from the Irish countryside myself so i loved the feeling being surrounded by wildlife and greenery while over looking the serene expanse of Kyoto. Epic sunsets! A chorus of cicadas and the summer heat. Sometimes i woke up hearing old Japanese tunes, recycling vans! So civilized! Watch out for the monkeys on the roof! The city is yours just free wheel it down the hill. Loved the buses, velvety clean seats. The city is built on a grid system so its so easy to navigate by bus, train or bike. Super SAFE! My favorite city in the world! Sincerely! The house is just gorgeous. The whole experience was overwhelmingly positive I've traveled extensively, seen all the continents except south America... so many great times but this is the most serene, peaceful and inspiring place ever!
Just 20 minutes bus ride from the city, this beautiful 2 story Japanese house sitting on the hill offers one of the best views of Kyoto from its garden. Very cosy and friendly atmosphere reflects Maki (the owner of the house) 's personality. Maki is a very likable person. Even just meeting her will make your stay very special! A bus stop is just a few minutes walk and more if you walk another 100m. Bicycle ride will be a good option to get around and there are lots to see around her house too.
