Maki's house is beautiful with a very scenic location overlooking Kyoto. There are many stunning features including a traditional Japanese room next to a very picturesque garden and pond. Maki is a friendly, patient and helpful host and gave me a lot of advice and guidance on exploring Kyoto. I enjoyed chatting with her and it was a pleasure staying at her home, I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone planning to visit Kyoto :)
...it is difficult to describe the subtle beauty of enjoying a morning coffee on Maki's veranda and at the same time watching and feeling the snowflakes silently bathe Kyoto city with white.
Maki's exceptional knowledge of Kyoto gave me many options from which to choose when exploring this unique city.
And the quiet streets, lanes and paths surrounding her home were dotted with hidden treasures to stumble across as I found myself, walking slower and slower with each passing day.
We had a great time there with Maki. Her house is just as wonderful as she is. The snow view from the window was truly stunning during our stay. Maki is patient and kind, and she speaks Englsih with great fluency, so it won't be a problem even if you don't speak any Japanese. I sincerely recommend this place for you. Thanks again, Maki, for all! :)
fantastic and warming experience! this is the first time trip in kyoto and i am lucky to choose maki's house. beautiful surroundings and amazing location. love the cats and even there is a michelin 1 star restaurant just in front. we will be back!
I arrived by mistake a day early to Makis house, and she was happy to have me stay the extra night. I am truly grateful that she let me stay in her home with such welcome. She is a very interesting person with lots of knowledge of the local area and was very helpful. I would wake up each morning and would a find a handwritten list of the trains and buses I had to catch each day to get to the places I needed to. The house is also incredible which a great view.
Hemos pasado el fin de año en casa de Maki y ha sido una experiencia fantástica , todo genial , la casa , el trato , sus amigos , la ciudad , las bicis ..
Todo perfecto . Estuvimos como en casa ( o mejor ) . Gracias Maki .
We stayed at Maki's place for 4 days in December and it was really nice. Her place is located on top of a small hill, so for us it was super cold and windy on our climbs back home as it was winter.
Maki herself is a very nice person to talk to. She will usually have dinner at home, so it was always cool to chitchat with her about things happening in Japan. These little experiences really made our kyoto trip so much more sincere and enjoyable, as we get to interact with the people. She is very eloquent in English! So she would be great for all the English speakers out there who wanna travel kyoto.
The location itself is not inconvenient at all. Taking the bus from the city centre takes maybe 20 minutes? And if you wanna explore the nearby shrines from Maki's place you can just borrow her bicycles.
Also, for all the cat lovers out there, Maki's place will be great as she has two adorable cats. Buchi is especially friendly and warms up to others very quickly.
All in all, we really enjoyed our stay in kyoto thanks to Maki's hospitality
This is our first time for visiting Kyoto and Maki's place is really great. It is very comfortable and the view is really good. You can completely enjoy the traditional Japanese flavor in the room. Maki is also very hospitable and is pleased to suggest some opinion if you need help.
Maki is a wonderful host. She's laid back, but present, welcoming and helpful - especially with the details of travel arrangements (getting there from the airport, having luggage delivered to the airport, etc.), but also in terms of suggesting things to do. Her beautiful, quiet home is off the beaten path but close to it at the same time (a 10 or 15 walk to bus stops & the Philosopher's Path). She let me borrow a bike, so I saved a bit of money on bus fare. She obviously loves helping visitors explore, and I enjoyed chatting with her in the evening. Just to give you a taste of what staying with her might be like, let me say that we made each other soup and shared a love of morning coffee, and afternoon mochi.
Maki is an excellent person, great guest, very smart and friendly. She plays lovely the piano, I appreciatted very much that = ) I gladly recommend her as a guest and as a friend!
Staying at Maki’s is a wonderful way to explore or rediscover this wonderful old city. Just a five-minute bike ride away from the philosopher’s path, a wonderful walk stretching along the eastern side of old Kyoto lined with temples and hiking access to Daiimonji it is a jewel not to be missed.
Maki, a seasoned traveller herself is the ideal host to discover not only the city but also get a glimpse of Japanese culture and hospitality. A stay, especially during the cherry season in April or autumn will make for an unforgettable experience.
Maki is a sweetheart! I stayed with her in 2008 and had the best summer of my life. Location is more than perfect. I'm from the Irish countryside myself so i loved the feeling being surrounded by wildlife and greenery while over looking the serene expanse of Kyoto. Epic sunsets! A chorus of cicadas and the summer heat. Sometimes i woke up hearing old Japanese tunes, recycling vans! So civilized! Watch out for the monkeys on the roof! The city is yours just free wheel it down the hill. Loved the buses, velvety clean seats. The city is built on a grid system so its so easy to navigate by bus, train or bike. Super SAFE! My favorite city in the world! Sincerely! The house is just gorgeous. The whole experience was overwhelmingly positive I've traveled extensively, seen all the continents except south America... so many great times but this is the most serene, peaceful and inspiring place ever!
Just 20 minutes bus ride from the city, this beautiful 2 story Japanese house sitting on the hill offers one of the best views of Kyoto from its garden. Very cosy and friendly atmosphere reflects Maki (the owner of the house) 's personality. Maki is a very likable person. Even just meeting her will make your stay very special! A bus stop is just a few minutes walk and more if you walk another 100m. Bicycle ride will be a good option to get around and there are lots to see around her house too.
