We live on the property, we have a dog and two cats, + we have a nice and calm life. I am a working mom, I like to paint and be creative. Love living in San Agustin, and love to travel!

Alex is a commensurate host. What can I say that hasn't already been proclaimed by other reviewers? She is a veritable treasure trove of information about the small town in which she lives (as well as Oaxaca as well as Mexico!), and can readily point you in any direction that your heart desires to go. She will happily speak English or Spanish with you, and for people like me, a first-time loner in a foreign country, she is patient and willing to show the ropes. The cabin is great, ecologically-minded, and as private/open as you want it to be. Alex has a great deal of respect for privacy, hers and your own, and is willing to be as little or great a part of your stay as you decide you need. She has a beautiful family, wonderful pets, and a fantastic property to stay on. The town of San Agustin is well-equipped with amazing local food, groceries, surrounding hikes/trails into the wild, and fantastic people. Again, what can I say that hasn't been already said? Go for it!
Alex was a wonderful host and made us feel very welcome. She helped us with finding the locations of different sites and ordering delicious pizza:) San Agustin ETLA is a charming place to wander around when not exploring other parts of Oaxaca, especially the centre de artes in San Agustin, which is quite a treasure.
We had an enjoyable time staying with Alex. The cabin is a wonderful country retreat, very peaceful and quiet, and her two dogs and two cats were always coming over to hang out with us on the porch. Alex was almost always around so it was easy to just walk the few steps next door to her house to ask any questions that we had. And if you want to explore Oaxaca Valley, San Agustin Etla is a great base to do it from. You can reach many of the important places in the area by collectivo (shared) taxi or a private driver, which Alex can arrange for you.
But Alex is a guide herself, and has lived in Oaxaca Valley for 16 years, so we highly recommend using her to visit many of the key sites in the area, as she will take you around in her car and share her vast knowledge about Oaxaca. FYI, she has dual Mexican/US citizenship and speaks perfect English, having lived several years in the US.
Another major plus is that she makes excellent food recommendations – both in Oaxaca Valley or Oaxaca City. For example, when she took us to the Wednesday Etla market, she introduced us to the best tacos and tamales that we’ve ever had - we would have never known to go to those food vendors without her.
One thing to be aware of is that San Agustin is a typical (i.e. doesn’t cater to tourists) Oaxacan town, so lunch is the big meal of the day and most of the local eateries close by around 7 pm. The cabin does have a small refrigerator and outdoor kitchen, so you can buy food from the stores in town (a quick five-minute walk from Alex’s place) and cook dinner, or you can order some cooked food to-go during the day and heat it up in a pot on the stove at night.
This place is idyllic. I was happy to just lay around in the hammock, take in the view and cook dinner in the outdoor kitchen. You can catch collectivo taxis at Doña Anita's, about a ten minute walk down the road, but there are some lovely walks to be had in the neighborhood. Up to CaSa is great and near the house there is a road and a trail that lead to an amazing view - some friendly neighbors were nice enough to walk with us up there. Alex was full of helpful suggestions and was a lovely host. I hope to be able to visit again.
The cabana was extremely comfortable and homey. The view has to be one of the best San Agustin has to offer. Alex was an exceptional host, offering both privacy and ample local knowledge that really made our time in Oaxaca much richer. It's a very quick trip from the cabana to centro, and it was extremely nice to be able to spend the day in the hectic city and then return to a very calm environment. Every morning we woke up to the sound of birds, and every night we fell asleep to the sound of church bells ringing from across the other side of the hills. We would definitely recommend Alex and her cabana if you want to get the most out of your trip to Oaxaca.
Alex is a friendly, open host with a beautiful space that she makes available to her guests. The cabana is set in the midst of trees and surrounded by the sounds of birds. A beautiful haven nestled in nature.
To travel to/from nearby towns and attractions, it is somewhat far (30 min, at least, by taxi), but it's very easy to find a collectivo ... even with limited Spanish.
Oaxaca is a must-see city, and I highly, highly encourage a visit to Hierve el Agua. Stunning. If you have the time and love nature, you may want to spend a half-day there.
I recently spent 28 delightful days at the cabana. My first experience with airbnb and my first meeting with alex and the lovely area of the central valley. The cabana is clean, efficient, private and well equipped for long visits. Alex helped me with needed travel and market information. If you really want to see and understand the great beauty and quiet dignity of Oaxaca and its pueblos this rental is your best home base. I recommend this rental to any and all.H
Alex is warm, friendly and helpful. Her house is right beside the cabin but she is not at all intrusive. The cabin is small and rustic (the tiny kitchen is outside!) but suitable for one or two people. The views are gorgeous.
But be prepared. San Agustin has little in the way of amenities. You need to plan your food and drink needs carefully. It's a 45--minute collectivo ride to Oaxaca so you can't just pop in-and-out. The sleeping area is a small elevated loft so not ideal if you are older or have a problem with a steep staircase. But if you're looking for a country idyll this may be your cup of tea.
Loved staying at the cabana! My partner and I stayed there for almost 2 months and enjoyed our stay immensely. Such a sweet spot and so peaceful. Alex's dog, Blade, and her cats came over and visited everyday. Perfect place for a quiet retreat for art, meditation or just to sit back and enjoy the slow life. Great trails right out the door to go walking in the hills! We definitely recommend this spot.
i stayed at alex's cabaña with my wife and three year old son for a week or so. the cabin was a suitable size for the three of us and would be ideal for a traveling couple. many bytes have already been justly used describing her wonderful cabin and it's lovely location. alex herself is an amazing host. she is an encyclopedia of knowledge about the entire central oaxacan valley and it's people, both of which she loves and has chosen to spend a lifetime getting to know. her recommendations and advice are excellent. as a host she is always available but never intrusive; though she lives there, you will feel that you have the expansive property to yourself. if you want company, however, her conversational skills in three languages are surpassed only by the content of that conversation, she has led an amazingly rich life.
stay at alex's, you won't regret it.
Alex is the "go to" person for anything having to do with the art scene in Oaxaca. She is interested in all things Oaxacano and is a veritable library of info. One of my favorite people to spend an evening with. Great casita with incredible views.
Cozy, lovely Cabana! Host by Alex (Y) who will make you feel at home, in a beautiful spot of San Agustin;the best experienced in Oaxaca!
Súper e increíble lugar para quedarse. Vista maravilla y calidad humana impecable. Quienes se decidan quedar en ese lugar quedarán muy satisfechos!!
We met Alex during our stay in her cabaña 2 years ago and we became friends... Since then, we've come back regularly to visit Alex, San Agustin and Oaxaca. We immediately felt life had more magic around Alex, her family and her world! She's a wonderful woman, and a great hostess: she just knows the right moment when to interact, recommend you a great place to visit or eat, and when to just be next door as your friendly neighbour. I'm secretly hoping that Alex runs a hotel one day!!
Alex is about the coolest person you could ever meet! We have been friends for the past 14 years and shared a bi cultural past, with lots of fun times together. She has a wonderful fmaily too. she will show you the best of Oaxaca and San Augustin in particular which is a little paradise in Oaxaca with its stunning view of the mountains, with Casa museum and its wonderful cultural opportunities just at hand. Her bungalow which she offer is very comfortable and enticing, wooden and beautiful. I recommend it whole heartedly. the fact that Alex, her fmaily and animals lives next door is a real plus
I fully recommend a visit to Alex's. If I could, I'd leave my place and stay in her beautiful cabin, which is like a dream place. Besides the amazing location, it is beautifully built, comfortable and has bananas hanging at hand's reach right in front of the door.
I'm sure Alex is a great great hostess, and she loves good food too.
