I enjoyed staying at Karel's place a lot. He was a very welcoming host, very helpful with finding my way around the netherlands and always an interesting dialog partner. On top of everything his place is one of the most beautiful houses that I've ever seen. He sure has an eye for beautiful old things and a great taste when it comes to interior. I can only recommend the place to everyone.
I would like to thank Karel for his great hospitality. He's been a wonderful host. It was an honour to meet him and a genuine pleasure to stay at his extraordinary house.
Karel was a very gracious and hospitable host. I stayed in his Guest Room for 5 nights while I was in The Hague helping my son move into Leiden University and the room was perfect for my needs. I had rented a bike and there was an area in the front entry of his home that I was able to keep it. His home is in a very nice area that is centrally located and within walking distance to the center of The Hague and the Peace Palace. Just around the corner are 4 or 5 restaurants, all with outdoor seating. Karel laid out a traditional Dutch breakfast for me each morning which was a nice surprise. His home was very cozy and was a wonderful place to stay. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend to anyone looking for a home away from home.
I stayed in Karel's attic room for three weeks. The location is ideal. It is very central--a five minute walk to the Peace Palace and a ten minute walk to the center of The Hague. It is on a cute and quiet street around the corner from a lovely circle with five popular restaurants and outdoor seating. There's a grocery store a three-minute walk away, and a tram stop a five-minute walk away. The room is cute and cozy; it looks like it does in the picture. Karel is a kind and reasonable host.
I had a lovely stay at Karel's place. The room is very comfortable and stylish. Karel is a courteous and generous host, and location is also great for exploring Den Haag.
There is a good range of cafes and restaurants in the vicinity which provide a range of cuisines to sample.
I did not spend too much time in this charming place. I would have enjoyed The Hague much more if I did. The area is full of small antique shops and interesting places. Stone's throw away from the Peace Palace. Karel is most accommodating with everything.
Karel is a gracious host in a lovely Dutch home near the Peace Palace. The loft on the fourth floor provides plenty of space to set up shop for a few days. There is a dresser, a small desk, a comfy bed, and a spacious shower. The room is well-lit in the day, but also has dark blinds in case you're in the mood to sleep in. Karel provided a small coffee and tea arrangement directly in the room, and even left out a copy of a great English book entitled "A Wanderer in Holland" (which I nearly read cover-to-cover!). He also left some nice tourist materials regarding Den Haag and was quite helpful with navigating the trams in the city, as well as the trains to other parts of Holland.
Furthermore, Karel provided a lovely breakfast each morning with coffee, orange juice, breads, meats, cheeses, yogurt, and granola. His home is truly stylish. He's collected many fine artistic mementos, from small sketches of Dutch towns to old clocks to fine plateware. As a host, Karel was flexible with my erratic schedule. I showed up a few hours late on my date of arrival because I got stuck in Utrecht after an accident at the train station. But he was awake and welcoming. He prepares breakfast more or less at your leisure. He also provides very pleasant conversation over coffee. Perhaps the only other things to mention is that you do share the toilet, and that in the winter the house was quite cold for a Texan. But if you're looking for a well-located, lovely accommodation in Den Haag, with a responsive and approachable host, I'd certainly recommend staying with Karel.
A thoroughly nice experience, and a thoughtful and considerate host; I felt immediately comfortable in Karel's beautiful home in a very picturesque part of The Hague. I would certainly recommend this to others - except perhaps very tall people. I am 5' 11" and the bed (with head and baseboard) would have been too short had I been one inch taller. Also, as I was in The Hague for a conference on mobility I feel a duty to point out that the room is at the top of a lot of stairs - making it suitable only for moderately fit and able people. In summary though, a very nice experience indeed.
Nate M did a great job describing Karel's home. I really considered it a privilege to stay there and to have the opportunity to appreciate a truly well appointed home, full of character and history. The breakfasts are served in a beautiful old kitchen on linen and with silver. The room is absolutely charming, under the gables, although be prepared for the long climb to the 4th floor. It's totally worth it, however! You can open the two large window in the ceiling quite easily. I didn't realize that my first night and it was a bit stuffy. Karel went out of his way to help orient me with the tram system in order to travel back and forth to my conference and he even gave me a ride with my luggage to the train station upon my departure, as he was headed to work. The location couldn't be better. Just next door is a great wine bar called Wicked Wines and there are a couple of other restaurants on the circle. A short walk takes you right into the central part of town with lots of wonderful art and design shops. I fell in love with the Hague and Karel's own home really embodies the classy aesthetic that I will remember of the Hague.
Great guests! It was a real pleasure to have them stay. Clean and tidy. Highly recommended. Welcome back anytime! :)
Karel spent 4 nights at my flat and was the perfect guest - courteous, considerate and mindful of the house rules. He is welcome back next time he needs somewhere to stay in North London.
Karel was a friendly and courteous guest. It was a pleasure to host him and we would be happy to have him back anytime.
Karel and his girlfriend were great guests
He is a nice guy. Left apartment very clean. We would like to see him again in our apartment.
Karel and his friend were really respectful guest. Communication was fluent and they took good care of the studio, leaving it in really good condition when they left
Karel and his girlfriend were great guests. I didn't meet them personally but Yon, my flatmate, told me that they were nice, friendly and really respectful. When they left, the room was in perfect conditions and the apartment in really good shape.
Karel, you are a perfect guess.
You are welcome to stay at my place any time.
Excellent guest and a real gentleman. It was a pleasure to host Karel and I would be pleased to have him as a guest again.
Karel is very friendly and considerate. They spent most of their time out and about, visiting the city but when they were at home we hardly noticed them. They were quiet and very neat and it was lovely having them as our guests. We'd definitely recommend them to any host.
