I unfortunately ended up not staying at Patty`s house. Although I arrived there and the house was really lovely, I discovered that it was really far away from Notre Dame, and the way there was poorly lit. It is, however, a lovely getaway location... not suitable if you want to be close to Notre Dame.
I also rhink pictures of the rooms should be provided..
Patty and Rick were wonderful and gracious hosts. Make no mistake: this is a true bed and breakfast experience -- not just crashing in someone's extra bedroom for the night.
Patty and Rick were delightfully engaging hosts who went out of their way making us feel welcome in their home.
And don't get me started on the wonderful, home cooked breakfast Patty treated us to each morning.
We will definitely be back next time we find ourselves in South Bend.
See my other review of the same date (we had two rooms and thus two reservations).
We had a fantastic stay! Wonderful host. Very welcoming and gracious. Sleeping arrangements were very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent both days we we're there. Highly recommend if you are looking for a nice secluded place close to everything.
Patty and Rick are the nicest people, and absolutely terrific hosts. They made us feel welcome immediately, and accommodated our too-early arrival without a thought. The setting is lovely; their house beautiful; our accommodations, while simple, were more than ample; the breakfasts scrumptuous. What else can I say? I can say: I would recommend this to anyone.
Best bnb on airbnb! Lots of places on airbnb are nice. You rent someone's place when they are gone and if you are lucky it is clean, complete and quiet. This is the first place we have stayed on airbnb that is all that AND a b n b. bed and breakfast. And bourbon. Rick and Patty were amazing hosts. I don't want to list all the extras of the place because I don't want to build it up too much, but if you like an actual hosted bnb, this is the best. Close to south bend and nd, super quiet, separate entrance. And wonderful wonderful hosts!
Our stay at Apple Tree Lane was great. Patty and Rick were awesome hosts. The home cooked breakfasts were worth the trip all by themselves.
Attended the ND vs Michigan game. Patty and her husband were wonderful hosts! We especially enjoyed the get together with the rest of the guests the evening before the game. Would definitely stay again next time we"re in town!
"It's a lake house" doesn't excuse poor maintenance, uncleanliness, and unsafe conditions. Nightmare doesn't cover our experience with Rick and Patty's lake house or their interaction since then.
It started well--they offered to let us use a kayak and Rick was very nice when he met us at the lake house to give a quick tour and hand over the key. The lake house is 20 steps from the lakefront just as listed, so that was wonderful.
However, the lake house wasn't well maintained:
-lots of bugs (both dead and alive) all over the house including a dead bee on the TV stand
-kitchen lights were finicky and didn't go on unless you played with the three switches around the kitchen seemingly without any rhyme or reason to when it'd come on
-black mold on the fridge door seals near the door handles right where you touch
-paint--lead based? your guess is as good as mine--was peeling off the wall
-water pressure was more of a drip throughout the house
-toilet bowl was stained yellow-brown
-shower surround was cracked
-door wood trim molding was coming off exposing nails and made it challenging to close and lock the exterior door
-beds and pillows weren't comfortable
-towels were threadbare
These conditions led to me constantly feel like I'd find spiders in my hair-- at one point I did find a spider on my head while sitting INSIDE. I didn't feel comfortable drinking the tap water or even using it for brushing my teeth. We tried to look past these issues and bought bottled water and our own towels.
The final-straw-issue for us was that when I turned the oven on to preheat for a pizza and went outside for 10 minutes and when we came back inside the whole house smelled very strongly of gas--the pilot light must've been out. I had previously checked the stovetop burners and they worked, so I assumed that the oven would work properly as well. Silly me for assuming that the appliances in the house I paid to rent would work without having to babysit it.
That added onto everything else just made the experience far more than disappointing and nothing like the relaxing trip we set out to have. We booked 4 nights but only stayed 1 night because of the safety issues in the house. Patty and Rick were very nice when I called about the final issue and asked if they could do something that evening, but we were beyond the point of feeling any sort of safety, comfort, or relaxation at the lake house. They said they would contact airbnb to initiate a refund which was wonderful, however, they are not willing to provide a refund for the nights not stayed there due to the house's condition. I'm going through airbnb to resolve this issue. I'd be ashamed to let my family stay at this house let alone rent it out to paying vacationers expecting cleanliness, safety, and comfort.
Why pay 3x the price or more (ND football weekend) for 1/3 the comfort and special extras? Patty and Rick were exceptionally gracious hosts, very friendly and welcoming, and I don't think there's anything they won't do if it's in their power to make your visit better. First, if you learn two local landmarks (the Comfort Suites Hotel on Kern Rd and then a stop sign), you can drive to their place in your sleep. The house is set back and very quiet. Time to campus after the game (going from north campus, against most of the traffic) was only about 20 minutes. They had some great tips for game day parking. The room was very comfortable -- and they provided a bottle of wine, cupcakes and portable hand warmers to take to the game. Breakfasts were more than you can eat, including fresh home-made baked goods. Talk about fresh eggs -- they have their own chickens. One evening I got back not too late, and Rick took me into his downstairs bar where we sampled a few of his many fine scotches. Upon my departure for O'Hare, they gave me a travel bag of goodies with snacks and water. What hotel in the world would provide such services??? I told them I don't know how they make any money. The response, "But we make friends." Clearly highly recommended. We'll be back when it's time for my daughter's graduation from ND.
