I'm English and moved to Alice Springs the middle of the Australian outback two years ago. It's quite a contrast, I can tell you!
Not much in the way of cultural activities here, but you can drive a few km out of town and camp under a million stars, the sun shines every day, even though in winter the temperature drops to below zero at night. We have kangaroos in our back garden (the pesky things eat our beans and peas) and the occasional snake. We also have lemon and orange trees, and I'm considering planting an avocado or two.
In summertime (Dec-Feb) it's hot - over 40 C but not humid, which makes it bearable - just. The best time to visit is between April and October, when the Jacaranda trees are in bloom.
I miss the ocean, which is two days' drive away either north to Darwin or south to Adelaide.
