Simply paradise. Matt was a wonderful host, kind, accommodating and amazing attention to detail. We enjoyed our stay immensely! Jazz music, candles, garden, great bookshelf and morning paper, it was by far our favorite place to relax in city. Thanks so much for sharing your oasis with us!
Matthew is pretty amazing. His presence is constant, in that things just magically seem to appear, and yet he's never intrusive. Newspaper was magically sitting on the back porch waiting for me when I wake up... used the last match in the matchbook to light a candle, next time I look there's a new matchbook... electric cord for cool outdoor lights gets tucked away when I forget to do that... etc. I decided Matthew must be part leprechaun or something.
The description is accurate, but also can't really capture the peace and tranquility of Matthew's space. You're in the back bedroom of a small house, which you enter via a side gate. There's a comfy bed, a small desk, and lots of drawer and closet space - plus a mini-fridge! You have a key to your door, which opens onto a porch (which you see in the pic) that faces Mount Washington across Marmion Way.
The Metro Gold Line runs just on the other side of the fence and the occasional quiet shuck-shuck, shuck-shuck, shuck-shuck of a passing train is actually restful. I loved laying on the porch bed to read or just to stare out at the garden and listen to a jazz station Matthew had playing quietly on the receiver in my room when I arrived. The aforementioned electric lights strung around the backyard are fun at night, too.
Highland Park is not an area of L.A. I was that familiar with, even having lived in the city for a number of years. It's basically between downtown and Pasadena, which means it's convenient to those neighborhoods (Metro Gold Line-adjacent), with Eagle Rock/Silverlake/Los Feliz/Hollywood a short Lyft/Uber ride away. HP itself is a somewhat sleepy neighborhood with mostly fast food joints and mom-and-pop businesses and I was generally spending time in other parts of the city, so I can't offer any specifics there. I'm sure Matthew has more ideas, though!
I can't finish my review without mentioning the house mascot, Vinnie. As Matthew gave me my house tour, a small dog literally crawled out from under my bed to greet me. He's likely to hang out with you during the day while you're at home, but only if you're ok with that, and he really only wants the occasional scratch behind the ears even then. Like his owner, he's very relaxed and friendly - and you'll appreciate your time with him.
Thanks, Matthew! And Vinnie!
We had the nicest time at Matt's home in Highland Park. Matt was a very generous, friendly, and gracious host. My boyfriend and I got in pretty late to LAX due to flight delays, so it was nice to be able to let ourselves in through a private entrance. Matt had put some jazz music on and opened the windows in our room for a charming welcome to the place. The room/house was amazing, with the outdoor patio being the real treat. Every morning, Matt would leave an LA Times for us, and we would get graced by the presence of his adorable dog Vinnie. It felt like a true getaway. I found out on our second day there that the previous owner of the home was a professional landscaper, and it really shows. Laying on the couch outside underneath the jasmine and hibiscus laced overhang feels pretty luxurious.
Matt was a really nice guy, very friendly and helpful, and we really enjoyed being able to chat with him. I highly recommend this place for staying in the Highland Park area if you're looking for tranquility and relaxation. Also nice- a cafe is a short walk away for morning coffee needs.
Matthew's Highland Park room and backyard retreat were very nice places to rest and regroup after a long day of sightseeing in Los Angeles. Matthew was very warm and literally met us at the corner of his street to show us where to park and ushered us to the backyard retreat. We arrived to fun music, the room was cozy and clean as was the bathroom. This was a perfect start to our Airbnb user.
Matthew was not home when we arrived, but made a point of introducing himself when he did arrive. His back patio was wonderful to relax in after a hectic day of college visiting. The neighborhood looks rough at first, but it is all families. A neighbor with a huge German Shepherd came out to say hello with the dog who turned out to be a spoiled baby.
We had a great stay! The room was charming and very private. The grounds are very nice and I only wish we had had more time to relax and enjoy them.
Matt went far above and beyond the duties of a host. He was a life saver with his help and advice! We were in town to attend a game at the Rose Bowl (Barcelona vs LA Galaxy soccer game). I was unaware that the event had sold out and had just expected to drive to the stadium, but Matt let us know about the sellout and gave us advice about using the railway and shuttles to avoid the hassle of parking. He found a transit guide in the LA Times for us, and let us borrow his personal transit cards for the train (we paid the fares, of course). I can't thank him enough, because he saved us a tremendous hassle of parking, plus the expense. Thank you so much for your help!
The room was very nice! The back patio was very cute and relaxing, it is such a shame that we only could enjoy it for one night, as the weather was a bit rainy during the other days. The house is located in a very nice area, close to the nice bars on York Blvd (try the Hermosillo!) and the restaurants in Echo Park and Silver Lake. Matt was very accomodating and very fun to talk with. And let's not forget about Vinnie, who is the cutest dog ever. We had a great stay and would definitely come back here anytime!
Matt is really laid back and helpful to let me know a few simple instructions on settling in. Cozy set up with everything you need. Matt's place is conveniently located for me that I was visiting Pasadena and LA. With an easy going host at a convenient location, I'd definitely consider coming back next time I'm visiting LA. Thanks Matt.
Awesome staying here! The backyard is really nice. Matthew is super awesome.
Matthew was an awesome guest. As an Airbnb host himself, Matthew did it perfectly. He was quiet, tidy as hell, and was a true pleasure to have around. I am happy I had some time to get to know him. I would love to have him back any time.
Matt's stay was short but sweet. He was more than willing to pay my cleaning fee for short stays and was a great communicator during the entire process. He left the house in tip-top shape, and I was happy to accommodate him. Because of his good correspondence, I felt as though we had met even though our paths never crossed. I would easily host him again.
