Food, wine and relaxing by our outdoor fireplace are the few simple things we enjoy and we can enjoy all of these things (and so can you) at our house in the hilltop village of Morruzze!
We had a great time in Vieques and a nice stay at Mambiche House. The view is lovely and the porch is the perfect place to enjoy it. I wish I had realized how close the neighbors would be. The house is very much in a neighborhood and is not the place for travelers looking for seclusion. There is wireless internet, but the connection is not fantastic. Had I known, I would have left the electronics I brought at home. There is no safe either, which is something to keep in mind. All in all, the house is a perfect place to stay if you want to get out, explore the island, and take advantage of the kitchen to steam up some Caribbean lobsters for dinner one night!
Mambiche House became our Vieques home for a week. The bed was comfy and AC great on those warmer nights, and extra bedroom nice to have for naps. The deck was perfect for our evening Rum & Tonics, drying our laundry (we opted not to use the lovely dryer), and the occasional visiting chicken. The kitchen offered the essentials plus spices etc. We rented Matthews car, complete with all it's character, it got us everywhere on the island.
We walked into Isabell Segunda regularly, too. The street the house is on is a well developed street and has both gringo and locals, plus a number of chickens (roosters are crazy) cats dogs yay. You're in the heart of local living. We'd stay there again for it's great value and welcoming space. Thanks for opening up your home!
This is a very nice house. The kitchen is stocked with anything you may need, including if you want to get a fresh lobster at the docks and cook it. There are 2 beach chairs and an umbrella, a convenient cooler -- all very thoughtful.
The location is also quiet nice if you prefer to be away from all the noise of the town but still be able to walk to it. The house is on top of a hill, so it's a nice exercise with a rewarding view to walk up it.
The hosts are incredibly responsive. We've had some initial issues, but they could not have responded faster. Things happen so I was very appreciative for their immediate attention to things.
Matt was extremely prompt in his responses, and provided great insight to our trip. The house was spotless when we arrived, everything was in perfect working condition, and it truly is an exceptional place. I would highly suggest anyone considering a trip to Vieques seriously consider this as an option for their stay. Many thanks to Matt, Ida, and Nano.
We had the most wonderful stay in Vieques at this house! The location was removed enough from the center of Isabel II to be quiet, but close enough to the main road to be a convenient drive anywhere on the island. The cottage was very comfortable - stocked with every thoughtful convenience. From start to finish, Matthew and Catherine were always easy to contact and very helpful. They have caretakers for the house that live just up the street, and they too were very accommodating and welcoming. We stayed for nearly a month, and tried to extend our vacation as it was coming to an end! Can't wait to return to Casa Mambiche!
We loved the Stone House in Morruzze. It felt like a relaxing home away from home. All communication with Matthew was excellent prior to arriving and the notes he supplied on the surrounding area, where to find what, recommendations on places to eat etc were fantastic and invaluable. Mario was there to greet us and although he speaks no english (and us, very little italian) we were able to communicate just fine. The house was extremely comfortable and well equipped for our family of four. The peace and quiet of rural setting after dashing around through cities was fantastic and the house is well located to explore some of the wonders of Umbria. We would highly recommend this house if you want to get away from it all like we did. Already we are yearning to get back there. Thanks Matt!
We stayed in Morruzze for 10 days and had a marvellous time. It´s defvinitely the best place I´ve ever stayed at in Italy. The house is beautiful, has a great patio and every comfort you need. The cities of Orvieto, Perugia, Assisi etc. are not far away, so you can experience typical Italian cities and afterwards you return to Morruzze and can relax in absolute quietness (expect for the donkey in ther neighbourhood :-)).
Matt was very helpful and answered all our questions. Mario often came by to chat and give us tipps- so we felt to be in good hands.
All in all it was a great trip to Umbria!
Matthew's beautiful house in Morruzze was a perfect getaway for the summer. The tiny village is locates on a magnificent Umbrian hilltop, between two valleys. The house itself is very elegant, furnished with good taste, comfortable, and fully equipped. We visited when the weather in Italy was extremely hot but the thick stone walls and the wind that blows from the valley make the house itself cool.
We stayed there for 10 days with our baby and had a wonderful time. There are about 10 stairs leading from the kitchen, located on the ground floor, to the rest of the house, on the first floor.
Matthew was an excellent host: helpful, considerate, available and pleasant. His neighbor Mario came by to show us around and was very nice. Although he doesn't speak English, somehow we understood every word he said.
Matthew also sent us recommendations for places to visit nearby, which were very helpful and made our little day trips easy and enjoyable.
If you are looking for an “off the beaten” track place to make your home base for touring Umbria, I can’t imagine that you’d find a better place than this one. Situated within driving distance to many destination towns in Umbria (even training to Rome which we did), the house itself is an area that doesn’t draw tourists and therefore provides the backdrop to a truly authentic experience. Sometimes the tradeoff for authentic is less creature comforts, but that is not the case here. The house has ample room, comfortable beds, a shower with plenty of hot water and water pressure, a well equipped kitchen that invites you to cook in for a night or two, and a garden that you won’t want to leave. The slower pace of a village town is a perfect fit if you are looking for a true vacation; the kind of place where you can play old school games like wall ball and kick the can in the charming piazza or a game of bocce in the garden. Unlike some foreigners who move into a country with their gated villas, Matthew has clearly come to Umbria with a desire to be part of a long standing community. Matthew is a delight to work with – responsive, helpful, and very easy to communicate with. The activities to do from the house are unlimited (cycling, running, olive oil tasting, eating out, wine tasting …)—we did them all, plus had the pleasure of being able to relax in this most special place.
We lived for five days in this Umbrian getaway, and I believe we discovered Umbria in its truth and essence. The town of Morruzze has a population of 30, three of whom have now become trusted friends. Our liveliest neighbor lived half a kilometer away in a home-turned-petting farm. The residents of this and surrounding villages know altogether about 30 words of English, and yet despite my equally awful Italian, communicate we did! The people here have bright eyes and smiles like they’ve lived the good kind of hard-working life. This is the place where we learned how to pick wild asparagus, how the freshest mozzarella just melts in your mouth, and where to buy a whole wheel (and no less!) of pecorino cheese for twenty Euro. This home is absolutely wonderful for an Umbrian getaway. We also used it as a launch-pad for visits to Orvieto and Assisi. It served us well in that way, though the drives were somewhat long (one hour each way, each town). So if you’re looking to be a classic American see-everything tourist, perhaps this won’t be your best choice. But if you’re looking to ESCAPE from classic American tourist patterns, this is absolutely your place. Our hosts are very good people, and took exquisite care of us. My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. I recommend it to anyone who wants nothing more than to drink Sangiovese and throw bocce while overlooking the best of the Umbrian countryside.
I was very happy to know them, they are a nice couple, friendly and very respectful people.
We had so much fun at Matt and Catherine's place. The area is a food lover's dream. We visited a town near by during the chestnut festival. There are so many wonderful little family run restaurants in the area and Matt showed us the best place to buy pecorino, an amazing butcher and fantastic Italian ceramics. We brought our two small children with us and never were lacking in things to do. Plus, it was wonderful to come back to the house, light a big fire and just cook!
Matthew and his wife, Catherine, have lovingly restored and upgraded their home in Morruzze, surely one of the prettiest and quietest ducal villages in Umbria. Located half-way between Orvieto and Todi, the house has views to the Tiber over fields of sunflowers and wheat. The garden is beautifully landscaped, and the grape arbor and nearby outdoor fireplace provide the perfect setting to dine al fresco ! Harry Parker
