I live in Berkeley. I designed and built The Cetusaurus.
This is the most beautiful house in the most beautiful location! We really enjoyed our stay at this amazing house. We arrived late from San Francisco and sat overlooking the ocean watching the sun disappear. The amazing house is really well equipped with absolutely everything you need. You can also spend ages just looking and marvelling at the construction. Jacuzzi is fabulous!
Great music collection.
There is no light pollution so stars were unbelievable.
The walk to Irish Beach is beautiful - we took our time watching hummingbirds and deer on the way. The beach itself is spectacular, very wild and remote, with huge driftwood piles and dens. Seals in ocean next to (email hidden) to spend a week stepping off the world ....
Final highlight was watching a lynx hunting a few miles further on our way north on the 101
Thanks for a great stay Berton ...
To start with the positive, this was a stunning setting (more forest than beach) and a very unique designed little cabin. We loved looking through photos of the construction process. For the price & area, and for the flexibility of doing a one night stay, it was generally nice and worth it. Great CD and movie collection, although as there was only a TV in the bedroom, we didn't get to the movies. Nice peaceful neighborhood a short drive down to the beach (and for the beach we went to, once you drive down, another 15 minute walk or so- but there might be other beaches around with easier access).
We did encounter some problems/disappointments... There were only 2 wine glasses, so bring your own if you are more than 2! Also the windows were very dirty... which detracted from the view. Dishes were also dirty- we had to wash everything before using them. So, mostly housekeeping problems, but you hope not to encounter that when your payment includes a cleaning fee...
We also had trouble keeping the fire lit, but that could have been problems in our technique!
Keep in mind the second 'bedroom' does not have a door (it opens into the living room) and the half bath is in the garage... If these things are important to you.
I'm not sure if this is his typical practice but the owner asked us to meet him along our way up to grab the keys, which wasn't the most convenient way to start our 3 hour drive...(although had we requested, I'm sure there was another way to do this). Also we didn't anticipate having to wash the towels and linens before leaving, which made our morning a bit stressful. Not a big deal for a long stay but would be good to know in advance for a one nighter!
Response from Berton:
I have remedied the wine glass situation, and the ocean air/water that all too frequently gets to the windows has been removed. Thanks for the heads-up.
We had a great time on the Mendocino Coast and very much enjoyed our stay here. The location is great and it was simple to coordinate with Bert. The ocean views from the home are beautiful and it was great to have beach access so nearby. The kitchen was well-equipped for the heavy cooking that we did over the weekend and it was great to have access to a washer and dryer as well. We also enjoyed Bert's extensive music collection.
Fantastic experience. The place is beautiful, quirky, fun, crafted with love. We had a great time there. We met Berton in person, he is very nice and interesting - he built this place himself. All around a positive experience. And by the way, the location is amazing and the drive up on highway 1 not too bad after all!
Bert has (email hidden) on the wild Mendocino (email hidden) to stay especially if the weather is going to be questionable, since the Cetusaurus itself (email hidden) to curl up by one of the fireplaces with a book (or listen or watch from the extensive CD & DVD collection Bert has left for guests).
The firm bed is better for back-sleepers than side-sleepers.
The jetted tub is excellent; the shower is low-flow & a challenge to keep off the floor in the absence of a curtain.
Bert himself was very helpful, going over
My family and I had a wonderful weekend up in Mendocino coast (Fort Bragg is also less than an hour scenic drive away.). There's a nice beach practically across the street (we walked there).
The views from the hill behind the house are stunning, even if the weather isn't cooperative, so there were no sunset or starts for us this time. I guess we'll have to return later for that.
Quite the amazing place, as well as comfortable to be in, and close to some of the best scenic views imaginable. I appreciated that Berton met me to pass on the keys and helpful information about the place. If I get a chance to be back in that area, will be checking it out again.
Bert was quite personable and accommodating, driving out of his way to our side of the bridge to deliver the key. The Cetasaurus was stunning - so unique and welcoming. We enjoyed the yurt-like architecture, both fireplaces, the heated floors, jacuzzi tub, fabulous views and the library of great music and movies, just to name a few amenities. The location was great - especially the sky at night (milky way!) and Irish Beach with its alien looking piles of drift wood. Would love to stay again!
I loved Cetusaurus! A cozy warm and beautiful home and surroundings. Anyone staying here MUST watch the milky way on top of the nearby hill that Berton guides. Will stay again at my next diving!
Amazing location- coast in front of you, forest behind you. Such an original home just perfect for a getaway! Berton (email hidden)!
