Really enjoyed staying aboard the Cathy Sue in Nantucket! The location is ideal - right in the thick of things - and the boat itself is fantastic! It has a nice little lounge area right when you walk in, then an eating nook and a bed in the v-berth (which is good size for two people.) Next time we're in Nantucket, we're hoping to stay aboard again!
It was nice to get rocked to sleep on the boat. It is pretty small "living quarters" but when you are on Nantucket you aren't hanging out inside anyway, you are out and about on the island. We had a friend living there that had a car but I'm not sure how it would've been to rent a car or take cabs, we probably would've had a different experience. Nantucket is a very expensive place to vacation but most people know that going into it:)
The boat is in ok shape, it certainly isn't luxurious but it's very clean. It was nice to have breakfast up on the top "deck". Early fall is a good time to go when it isn't crowded!
Cara was an amazing host! The Cathy Sue exactly suited our needs. If you're looking for a really down-to-earth genuine boat experience with A LOT of room and a great central location for an unbelievable price and no pretentiousness, this is the place for you. We were able to walk everywhere. We were within minutes of the grocery store. We were able to cycle over to Madaket - our favorite part of the island - in 40 minutes and over to The Green for healthy, out-of-this-world smoothies every morning in 4 minutes. We had a little technical glitch during our first night that was totally beyond the control of the boat owner, but he showed up immediately and fixed the problem. Cara even extended us an extra-thoughtful bonus as a result. If you are the outdoorsy, adventurous, low-maintenance type, you can't do much better than the Cathy Sue, and Cara will take care of you!
Fun times on the Cathy Sue!
Cara was responsive and a great hostess. If you stay on this sweet boat, expect adventure - you take a launch to and from the harbor dock, and the boat does not have electricity or water (but it does have a head). There are shower facilities available on shore, and flashlights and lanterns are provided.
The boat was nice and clean but conditions pretty bare bones (for instance the ladder was broken and it was super hard to climb back into the boat after swimming). The only reason for not giving 5 stars is that the price is a little steep for what you get. But totally worth it for those seeking a bit of an adventure. Its like camping, but on a boat!
Was this boat built when I was born? Probably, but who cares! It's clean, spacious, in a prime location and a great way to spend the night with millions of stars up above. If you're not a champagne and caviar kind of girl, this boat is for you. If you are, then think ahead and bring the goods with you aboard this lovely little escape from stuffy B&Bs and hotels that lack character like Cathy Sue. Use strategy when coming/going because there is a $5 fee for a harbor launch, but with a Whole foods like supermarket, a tidy public shower facility and several bars/restaurants you can decisively prioritize and spend the day on one of several beaches, tour the brewery-winery-distillery and catch a bus home with your rented bikes in stow for a fabulous under $500 vacation that leaves me wanting to book Cathy Sue for a full week next summer.
The boat was wonderful. It was easy to get to using the Harbor Launch and was perfect for a few day getaway to Nantucket.
We had a great time on the Cathy Sue. It is a great idea for affordable accommodation in Nantucket and staying out in the harbor really incorporates the ocean-life-style into the vacation. The boat is lovely and had much more spacious than we expected - great for a couple. But without electricity it is a little basic - lighting is by lantern (although we found this more than sufficient for our needs), but bear in mind there is no refrigeration or running water - so plan accordingly. The showers at the marina were great though. Overall we had a really relaxing getaway on the boat and loved watching the yachts go by. The boat wharf is also right by a bunch or restaurants and bars in the heart of Nantucket town. I recommend bringing a cool box and ice to store drinks and food snacks, and a few utensils for preparing snacks. Bottled drinking water is provided.
Staying on this boat was fabulous! Even without electricity or a shower the experience was unforgettable. There are private bathrooms and showers at the harbor. We were able to charge our phones at a nearby island rental shop and "the boys" were very helpful. A water shuttle takes you to and from the boat from 6am - midnight for 5 dollars a person each way. If you go to the dock and they're not there just hang out a few minutes and they'll appear. Cara the owner left us a radio to call the water shuttle and some lanterns. She also left us some delicious treats on the boat.
The boat itself (Cathy Sue)
The boat has a nice outside area where you can drink a coffee and observe the rest of the harbor. We climbed the ladder into the wheel house to sit and watch a lightening storm, it was so cool! When you walk inside there is a small lounge area with a bean bag chair and couch that pulls out into a bed. Down some stairs is a fridge and sink on one side and dinette table with booths on either side. There is a bathroom and at the end of the boat is a bed. It is a large bed with a sunlight that opens to get the most incredible breeze. I got a great night sleep with the therapeutic rocking and noise of the ocean. We had a fantastic time and would definitely do this trip again!
Negatives- The bathroom had an unpleasant odor but you couldn't smell it unless you were inside. The need to be at the shuttle by midnight was a slight concern but if you enjoy the island all day you aren't staying out late anyway.
Had a great experience on the Kathy Sue!!! Total last min booking but couldn't be happier. Cara & jim were great and went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and show me all I needed to know. First time in Nantucket so was helpful. The boat was great. Just what I needed. Peace and quiet and being in the harbor, I was rocked to sleep and slept like a baby both nights. Super easy to get to the island. The launch was quick and only $5 each way. Lots of dog friendly places and so much fun walking around town. I was fortunate enough to stay on the boat for the Fourth of July fireworks. Perfect!!! Cara provided what I needed. Sheets, towels, flashlights etc. I picked up some candles for extra light. I was able to charge my phone on the dock while I walked around town. Honestly having no electricity made my experience all the better. I needed to get away!!! It was perfect.
