Six Degrees recording artist Rara Avis has a deep love for the place where yoga and music meet. A pioneer in the world of ethno-techno fusion, Rara has produced and collaborated on many celebrated yoga music projects, ranging from his work with Shaman's Dream and Desert Dwellers, to Jai Uttal, Deva Premal, Donna DeLory, Karsh Kale and more. His Yogic path began in his early 20's writing music for cancer patients who were under going extensive combined yoga and sound therapy. He spent two years apprenticing as a sound healer/yoga instructor, then moved to Los Angeles, where he began performing with Shaman's Dream both in yoga classes and at monthly ecstatic dance events. Rara also found himself deeply embedded in the electronic underground community known as Moontribe, who for over 15 years have been throwing cutting edge all night full moon gatherings out in the Mojave Desert. It was here that he connected with Treavor Moontribe and Amani Friend to join forces and become part of Desert Dwellers.
His styles are always seeking to blend genres as he has an eclectic array of training in blues, jazz, classical, ethnic, electronic, and contemporary. He has earned a degree in jazz and classical studies from Malaspina University on Vancouver Island and uses his well formed knowledge of music theory, composition and arranging to produce expertly crafted songs with an equal blend of live instrumentation and programmed electronic elements.
The two worlds of yoga and music have always been intertwined and Rara is very happy to now be one of the co-founders of (website hidden), an online digital music store that features a huge selection of yoga inspired music from all over the world. The website launched in late July and focuses on helping teachers to build great playlists and be able to promote them to their students. Rara's long time musical collaborators Craig Kohland (Shaman's Dream) and Amani Friend (Desert Dwellers) are working with him to bring their years of collective yoga music experience to the project.
