I am a doctoral candidate in Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. My research focuses on history and memory, and how to teach traumatic and difficult historical events. Formerly, I worked as a public school teacher in the East San Francisco Bay Area, teaching tenth grade English and poetry. I lived in Oakland for four years (in the Adams Point neighborhood).
I am half-Japanese and half-Irish and grew up in the greater Los Angeles area. I miss California a lot, but I currently live in Brooklyn (Crown Heights). There is something very distinctive about New York--I do love walking the neighborhoods, drinking far too much coffee, and eating lots of very fattening, sweet things I stumble upon in the city.
I've been lucky enough to travel in Asia (Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and Japan). I also lived in Beirut, Lebanon for one summer doing research on Lebanon's civil war history curriculum. I've never been to South America or Africa, and also look forward to traveling a bit more within the U.S. and Canada.
