Hey, I’m Emile!

State College, Pennsylvania, United States · Member since February 2012

I am originally from Vermont and I love to travel where I have spent a considerable amount of time in Central America and Europe. I have moved to State College in 2010 to pursue a doctoral degree in Child/Adolescent Psychology. At that point, I really missed traveling and I remembered how difficult it was to find a place while studying and living abroad. I decided to buy a large house so I could meet many new people by hosting them, and by providing leases that are flexible so people can travel with more ease. In 2011, I bought a house that was large and had a lot of sun, but it needed some updating because it felt like it had not changed since the 1970´s. During my first year owning the house, I have spent a lot of time remodeling it where I have installed a new kitchen (equipped with granite counter-tops, new appliances, new flooring and new cabinets), re-did all the hardwood floors in the house, and remodel one of the bathroom (it now includes a rain shower and steam unit). My goal with the house is to provide a comfortable place for people traveling to State College, without dealing with cumbersome leases. I have hosted many PhD students, post-docs, young career professionals from all over the world (e.g. Israel, Colombia, Italy, Russia, France, Costa Rica, Germany, Austria, Japan, China, Brazil, Ecuador, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia and the Netherlands).

In addition, another main aim of the house is sustainability. In 2015, solar panels were installed on the house which provides 100% of all the electricity for the house. Additionally, tiered gardens have been installed in the front garden with a drip irrigation system that uses rain water that is collected from the roof. In 2017, there will a fresh water pond and an underground greenhouse installed. These efforts are done so that the house can be self-sustaining.

I look forward to meeting you and if you have any questions about my place, please do not hesitate to contact me.
