I found my “sense of place”.
For two months I held the key.
The key was ambiance. It unlocked curated doors to an open, flexible space; the artful placement of furnishings loved, collected, across time, transmitted a sense of diligence, and, pure joy.
Daylight light, evening skies, danced in through tall banks of windows; yet, so, private, so, secure, I never lowered the shades.
The space and host invited me to play, create, unwind; to explore inward and outward self…others…places…things.
I dotted open shelves with personal mementos, colorful scarves, books… even cummerbunds.
My computer streamed uninterrupted (yes…work).
I played with easel, pencils, paper, pen…my yoga mat and props. I enjoyed the quality of sunrise as I opened double entry doors, sipped locally roasted coffees, artisan teas and breads.
Another door opened to the sounds of a fountain; water moved along a stream within the garden I viewed below.
In the afternoons west windows warmed my back as I read in a comfortable chair while north windows tempered the air.
I woke to a cacophony of birds, an exterior mural of the city; the sound of bells, dogs, people seemed like occasional notes across an atypical tranquil melody given such walking convenience.
I exited high walls to perhaps one, if not the best walking streets, affording my transition (fast or slow) to the building crescendo of central San Miguel (the Jardin).
And, the, meals…numerous cafes were close by, nevertheless, I created many slow cooked meals, recalling the art of stews and soups in a crock-pot, baking fish and meats gathered at organic farmer’s and neighborhood gourmet markets, in a convection/bake/toaster oven…or the convenience of a blended smoothie to carry to swimming, meet ups with new friends, a day of my creation, unfettered.
My privacy was respected, yet Barbara was there with a generosity of spirit and knowledge to help guide me when needed…when ready (even if she had already explained it all in the Guest Guide sitting upon your long, historical work/play/whatever you want table…). Bravo Barbara…A+ for patience, breadth of spirit and much artful vigilance.
Can you duplicate this ambiance elsewhere? I personally don't know where I could find this sanctuary even in a coveted hotel around the corner where I did spend a night of interrupted sleep by constant service noise. So at the end of the day and many more dollars later I could not duplicate the ambiance I found here.
We loved Barbara's casita! It's truly a magical place . Her home and garden reflect a true artists eye and we could easily have moved right in! She has created a lovely sanctuary and when you are done exploring the beautiful city of San Miguel, her casita is a serene place to come home to. She is a lovely person and her home reflects that spirit. We will surely be back. Many thanks, Barbara :)
We had the most delightful visit to SMA staying at Barbara's Casita.
Our basic needs were a comfortable bed, a quiet spot and good shower and those needs were certainly met. Beyond the basics there was our lovely host,Barbara, who was so gracious, welcoming and helpful. San Miguel is indeed an amazing and enchanting destination, but the comfort of the casita, the friendliness of Barbara and her adorable dog Joey were major highlights. We left
feeling so lucky to have been able to stay at the casita, get to know Barbara a bit, and to become familiar with SMA and the neighborhood of Parque Juarez. We would love to come back.
We stayed in Barbara’s casita in the downstairs flat, handsomely designed in the San Miguel style filled with artful and personal touches. The garden is a refreshing and meticulously tended green space just outside your accommodation.
Barbara is a gracious and thoughtful host who even stocks a day’s worth of groceries in your kitchen before you arrive. Her knowledge of the area is extremely helpful, and her “guest notes” about San Miguel are very useful — almost a guidebook to San Miguel in itself.
Nearly everything you might want to see around San Miguel is within a 10-minute walk or a $3 cab ride.
Barbara’s place makes San Miguel a five-star experience, and her reviews confirm it. We highly recommend Barbara’s El Jardín del Ciervo Vigilante for a memorable residents'-point-of-view experience of San Miguel de Allende.
The casita at El Jardin del Ciervo was an exquisite and uplifting refuge from all the excitement to be found in the streets of San Miguel. Barbara was a gracious, warm hostess and had great recommendations for events and places to dine. Her style and taste are reflected in the accomodations and suited us to a T. Everything functioned perfectly ( fabulous shower, fireplace, patio) and that is no small feat in Mexico! We couldn't have been more pleased!
Barbara greeted us with a warm smile and showed us her lovely garden/patio area as well as our private patio. We were taken to our casita and Barbara had made a gorgeous floral arrangement (from her garden) that greeted us on the counter; a fragrant candle was lit as were the floor lamps on either side of the comfy~looking, mosquito~netted "real bed". We were tired from traveling and wanted to collapse in the soothing environment Barbara created.
Barbara went over all the "details" we had previously received via e~mail; "updated" certain items and answered the few questions we had.
Yummy snacks were on the counter; some cheeses, papaya and delicious peanut butter were in the refrigerator.
The neighborhood was exactly what we were told it would be; quiet and calm, however close to "downtown" ~ walking distance.
Everything was perfect!
Muchas gracias Barbara ~
yes the description is exactly the experience
Barbara was a wonderful hostess. Kind, sweet, friendly, organized. A true free spirit. She made our stay in SMA welcoming and wonderful. The Casita is lovely, wonderful art, bed was comfortable, the shower hot, and almost everything we could need was provided for. The neighborhood is great, close to the Centro, safe, and beautiful.
I would totally recommend a stay, and we look forward to coming back next year!!!!
Igualamente as they say in Spanish. It was wonderful to meet the two of you - you made hosting so easy. Do stay in touch and will be looking forward to your next visit.
Abrazos y saludos,
I loved my stay with Barbara at 17D on De Aldama...Lovely neighborhood that is uncharacteristically quiet for San Miguel.
Beautifully appointed studio with great light, gorgeous courtyard, original art and most importantly - a very comfortable bed. Purified water in the sink, shower etc made things so much easier...I drank water from the tap every day.
Fridge and small kitchen worked perfectly for my needs....The Studio is located two or three blocks from Saturday's organic farmers market - a huge benefit and convenience. I often picked up salads and vegetables...and ran into my new friends. Walking distance to great restaurants.
Loved coming home to a community...plenty of privacy and yet appreciated that I had an apartment mate below me and Barbara to ask questions.
Pleasant surprises....very comfortable writing desk, access to Vonage line that allowed me to call US at no charge, and WI-FI worked every day!!
Overall, the place and my host exceeded my expectations. I will stay there again on my next trip to San Miguel.
Barbara's casita was very comfortable. It is beautifully decorated, peaceful, and with all the comforts of home. It is within walking distance from Centro, Parque Juarez, and wonderful restaurants, but without the frenzy of activity and noise of Centro itself. Barbara is a lovely host. She provided plenty of information on San Miguel, how to get around, good restaurants, maps, whatever you need. I hope you will stay here and enjoy the truly charming ambiance.
Gracias Meredith y por nada. Glad it was just what you needed. If you are so inclined to return I would love to get together. What kind of fish would you recommend?
Barbara was a wonderful guest. Very interesting conversation, respectful of the place. She hosts, so she knows what it is like from both sides. Again, great guest,
Barbara is a fellow Airbnb host(ess), so she knows the drill quite well on being a good guest. She was quiet, clean and orderly, and very respectful of normal house protocol. She stayed for 3 weeks, but the time flew by. She made and shared a delicious lamb dinner one night..!
Barbara and Sara were gentle and quiet and easy going. They fit right in and did their own thing. Barbara rents in San Miguel so that was interesting and informative as she has had more experience with Airbnb. Wish I had chatted more with Sara. Before I knew it they were gone, off to Yelapa.
Barbara was a lovely guest! She figured out the somewhat slim public transportation system in Houston with virtually no assistance. I felt she treated my home as if it were her own.
Barbara was a character. She and her companion fit in very well with the island vibe. I wish they could have stayed longer, and I look forward to their return visit.
Barbara was a great guest , she came by just for a night .
She is comunicative and uncomplicated and I am sorry that her stay was so short
Barbara was great to have here. She communicated very well and was very kind. We hope she comes back soon and would recommend her as a guest very highly.
Barbara stayed at my place for just over a week, and was a wonderful guest. So pleasant, and so easy to host, and left everything in perfect order during and at the end of her stay. Will miss her! To other AirBnB hosts: Highly Recommend!
