Sam's place was just right for my stay. Every day, I sat next to the lake just 20 yards from the cottage. The hammock was a nice touch, too. For being just 6 miles from downtown Orlando, it felt very much like a nature vacation. Basic, clean, comfortable. Perfect for my needs. Sam was a responsive host, kind, gracious and ready to help. Would go back, without a doubt.
I am not sure where to begin so I will describe everything the way it happened. My wife and I were going to Cocoa Beach to deliver a fountain to a friend. We thought it would be nice to stay in Orlando because we have yearly passes to Disney. We invited a couple of relatives but were not sure if they were coming. I had been looking at Airbnb for some time but was reluctant to book because we check all places out on Tripadviser first before booking, it appears they do not review Airbnb properties. I found Lakeside Cottage-close to all! I read several of the reviews and looked at the pictures, it looked good. I decided to book it, which stated my trip into the Sam Zone. He asked to post my phone number and he proceeded interrogate me, what time will you be arriving? I am not really sure Sam, I think 3PM? How many in your party, my wife and I for sure but there may be others (Sam charges extra per person).
2nd email: Boni,
Your reservation is for two, but you mentioned the possibility of additional guests in your party... Have you worked out who is coming?
No Sam not really, 2 for sure.
I could go on and on and on about the 6 emails and 8 text messages Sam on the lake (that’s what he calls himself) but let me just say, there were 2 pages of instructions to be followed and relentless text messages to be answered. Let me also say that for the first 2 or 3 emails Sam seems pleasant and reasonable, thing quickly change after that.
We thought to ourselves, this must be a very special property, but we were hugely disappointed. Upon arrival, Sam was waiting in the drive way, not looking very happy (I gave him ample warning of our arrival time and we had a code to get in, what’s the deal?).
What’s that? A utility trailer. Sam almost became unglued, he had previously told me that he had a huge parking lot that almost nobody uses (he called it a big lot). Besides had it been an issue I would I parked it somewhere else.
He took us in to the cottage which did not resemble the web pictures at all (see pictures), after what seemed like more endless question from Sam, I told him we were going to dinner. He explained that everything in the area was closed, OK Sam Thank you. We drove around a like and most places were closed or closing (10PM Saturday) so we picked up some KFC about 5 blocks from the property amongst the prostitutes and the drug dealers and decided that Lakeside Cottage-close to all! Was not for us. We went back to the property to get out trailer (Sam thought I should take it off) and I took pictures I would post as a public service in the future.Hope I can post the pictures?
Sam's place was located very well for my trip in that it was centered between downtown, the airport, and a conference I was attending. His place is on a larger property with other units and is set back a little from the lake.
He also was gracious enough to have the AC going 24/7, which made the place nice and cool when I checked in. The shower hot water was very hot, and the pressure was OK.
The sleeping loft is up and inclined ladder and was a nice temperature even though it was higher off the ground, and I did not make use of the kitchen while I was there, I mostly just slept. I think the place is maybe big enough for 2 people comfortably, though I think it sleeps 4.
Sam is very nice and affable, he even took delivery of my lost luggage and put it in the efficiency when the airline dropped it off when I was at my conference. Overall a good experience.
Sam was a very attentive host and checked in with me regularly to make sure that everything was ok. The pictures are accurate and I think do the place justice. It is cute and on the smaller side. Perhaps a bit smaller than the pictures suggest, but it is an efficiency, after all. Many diy projects and repairs evident, which for me added to the charm. Very old Florida. Clean. Low key. Relaxing. Convenient. I had a very good experience and would not hesitate to return.
We stayed at Sam´s for three nights. The cottage was a little less than we expected, apart from the kitchen which is very clean and has everything you would need on a vacation. As others have pointed out in their reviews, some of the photos were taken from very generous angles and with unusually good lighting which makes it easy to be kind of disappointed when you actually get there. For example, the photos don´t show that there were window a/c units in the living room and the bedroom which block out almost all of the daylight and make it impossible to open the windows. As someone who tends to be slightly claustrophibic and doesn´t do well with dry a/c air, I probably wouldn´t stay there again.
BUT Sam was very nice and helpful and did his best to change some of the things we pointed out to him after the first night. he even took out the window unit in the living room. We were told not to open the windows anyway to avoid bugs coming in, so maybe fly screens would be a good idea. Sam is the kind of host you can talk to if there is anything you are not satisfied with.
Also the rather wild outdoor area is a nice spot to hang out. We really enjoyed sitting on the dock at night, with a cold drink, staring at the lake. Thanks for that!
We had a great time! Sam has a great place in a beautiful area, and, with a car, convenient to almost everything. Sam was great, helpful, and friendly, and the place was more than comfortable for the two of us. Thanks so much! If we visit again, this is definitely the place to stay.
Nice place on a lake side, very calm but "close to all" indeed.
Sam was a great host, explained everything and rented us a canoe for free
Хорошее место на берегу озера, очень тихо и спокойно, но близко до парков и шоппинга.
Сэм классный, весьма доброжелательный и разговорчивый. Обязательно попросите у него каное - незабываемые ощущения, обсобенно, по первому разу.
We were visiting Orlando for a weekend getaway and planned to spend most of our time being tourists. The efficiency was a great home-base for us--the kitchenette was convenient to put together breakfast in the morning and the place was comfortable to relax and rest up at night. It's in a great location that's convenient to the big attractions, but secluded enough to be quiet at night.
As a host Sam was very friendly, made a point to check that things were OK a couple times.
A nice little Appartement clean and quiet. Sam was really friendly and helpful. Had some good days there and enjoyed the stay.
Sam's place was absolutely perfect for us. Simple, cozy, and comfortable. A good place to remember to slow down in life, and Sam makes sure to help accommodate you in the warmest way, really caring fellow. Lots of interesting stuff to look at on property, just about anything that has an engine bay at least and I very much enjoyed looking through that. The lake in the back is absolutely beautiful. Looking forward to stopping by again :-).
Also, the loft is the place to be! Make sure to call dibs on that BEFORE sleeping arrangements are made in your group, it's all sorts of comfortable.
Meredith was visiting with a group from FL to participate in the Rock & Roll Marathon! She was a great guest...independent & interesting to talk with...I'd welcome her back any time
Meredith and Sam are wonderful guests. Very friendly, easy-going, likeable, and fun to chat with. Great people--highly recommended.
We thoroughly enjoyed hosting Meredith and Sam. They have great humour and we enjoyed their company.
Meridith and Sam were super cool and friendly folks! They were busy hitting up all the Fringe Festival events - but the time we spent together was really nice! I also thought it was great that Meredith always called me Mattie :-)
Hope to see you both again next time you are in NYC!!
Meredith and Sam are wonderful, fun, and resourceful people. If you're coming to Orlando, then it would be a shame not to see it through their eyes. Whether you're here for business or leisure they've got enough connections to recommend the perfect setting, bar, restaurant, club, theater, event, performance, or theme park. They are genuine and easily portray a sense of comfort and ease. They are open minded eccentrics, and seem to be friends with all that inhabit the city beautiful: Orlando, FL.
Meredith and Sam are excellent, reliable individuals. They stay clear of people's personal lives, gossip and drama and have a clear respect for all walks of life making them hospitable, trustworthy and life long friends.
