Scottish born of Irish extraction, my father who was born and raised in India served in Northern Nigeria for 18 years as a doctor in the Colonial Medical Service so my earliest recollections are of Africa.
Having gone to boarding school in Scotland until I was 18 my early career was spent in London, followed by 4 years working for a trading company back in Northern Nigeria, concurrent for three of those years with the Biafra war in eastern Nigeria. After a couple of years in London I worked in Mid West Nigeria for a Nigerian company for 18 months then spent a year in Ghana working for a Dutch company.
Returning home, i worked for a variety of organisations, for some of which I travelled in Europe and USA.
I still travelled on holiday and, although now retired, I continue to taken regular trips abroad.
I much prefer to be on the move rather than take static resort-based holidays as I generally have a personal, cultural or historical interest in the places I visit. Thus far I have visited India five times and also travelled through Thailand, Nepal, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Mali, Tunisia, Libya, Lebanon, Turkey, Sicily, Cyprus and Crete.
